Photos are broken when the site is private

  • Unknown's avatar

When I set the site to private – all of the photos become broken and won’t display. If I set it to public, they appear. But, I don’t want the site to be public.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @axentaviation, can you clarify where the photos are not displaying?

If the entire site is private, the images within it will display on the site, but only while you are logged in.

    Hey supernova,
    Yes, it’s the entire site.
And it’s when I’m logged in. When I’m not logged in, I can’t see any of the site, of course.
The “featured images” and all of the photos on blog posts are broken.
This is a free WordPress site so there are no plugins and it does this on any theme.

I made the site public (which allows all of the images to load) and went back to private under setting>reading and this has seem to fix the issue for now. I’ll keep an eye on it because I’m the past, this fix didn’t last.

  • Hmm, if this happens again, please take a screenshot of what you see on your end, upload it to your media library, and let us know. We’ll take a closer look.

It started happening again. Posted photos are not showing up. If I make the site public, they immediately appear, but once I go back to private, they don’t show up. I have uploaded a screenshot to the media library.

  • Hi there,

Usually when an issue like this occurs (private images not displaying even if you are logged in) it can be traced to an expired or broken login auth cookie stored on your local web browser.

It looks like you are using Google Chrome as your browser, so with this in mind I would like you to try the following

    – clear your cache and cookies based on the steps google recommends here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050
    – Also make sure you are not blocking any “3rd party cookies” as explained in that guide as well.
    – If you continue to have loading issues after completing those steps, I would like you to try another browser instead, like Firefox. Are you able to proceed if you use a browser other than Chrome?

    Thanks for the additional info!
