photos, attribution, specific permission, etc.

Please direct me to any WP information page that might clarify the use of photos when there does not seem to be ownership cited at the source.

Also, a photo I’ve located at Google images lists it as an “AP file photo.” Is giving attribution generally sufficient for non-commercial blog posting, or might I need, e.g., specific written permission from the Associate Press?

    Thank you.

NEVER post anything from AP. They send their lawyers after everyone that uses their stories or photos without paying them – attribution or not. AP does not give permission unless you first give them money – a yearly fee and their fees are hefty.

Unless you are 100% completely sure an image is in the public domain, find the copyright owner and ask permission to use it. That is the only way. Some will have it clearly stated what their policies are, but some will not. Some may be under CC attribution and some may not.

    Bottom line: always ask.

AP is unusual in their nastiness; they are without question the most content-retentive organization to ever have claimed to be in the business of disseminating information.

Yeah, A friend of a friend posted some stuff from them he found on a third party site, and they came after him, and the AP mouthpieces were asking for thousands of dollars in “damages” and threatening lawsuits. I’m not sure what happened in the end.
