Photos blocked in China?

  Hi, I have a website for the city of Shenzhen, China. Unfortunately, the photos on my site are not showing up in China. People loading it from outside of China can see the photos. Any ideas?

  Hi Rose!

  Thanks for passing this issue along. Would it be possible to obtain some additional information from one or two of your followers in China that are having trouble loading the images?

  1. What is their IP address? They can find out by visiting the following site:

     http://www.whatismyip.com/

  2. Can they try loading the three following addresses and see if any load correctly?

     http://dfw.wordpress.com/ 
     http://sat.wordpress.com/ 
     http://iad.wordpress.com/

  3. Can they load http://wordpress.com/?

  2. No, xxxx.wordpress.com addresses are blocked here
  3. No, also can’t.

  Here’s some additional info: A lot of my friends also run wordpress sites with their own domains and the photos work fine, so I know it’s not that China is blocking all photos.

  I recently purchased a new theme and have been tinkering around on the backend. I read that it might be an issue with the photos being in the wordpress cloud and not loading from there, but that’s a little too technical for me to check. Like, I thought maybe I had enabled jetpack, but it doesn’t look like I did.

  Hi Rose,

  It looks like the Chinese government is blocking all WordPress.com domains. I suspect that the friends you’re mentioning are running self-hosted sites, not hosted here at WordPress.com. This changes the image file extension, which is likely why their images still load.

  Unfortunately, there really isn’t anything we can do on our side to get this working. One option would be to use another service to host your images and embed them from the service onto your site following the instructions here:

  http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/uploading-images/#insert-an-image-from-the-web

  This would allow you to host the images elsewhere on a domain that is not blocked by China and then embed them into your site.
