Photos in Twenty Eleven sidebar

Is there any way to put small photos in the sidebar of my Twenty Eleven theme blog? I’d love to have a widget that would let me have a sidebar photo for each recent post. Is this something that can be done with the “Showcase Sidebar”? I read about the showcase template but couldn’t really figure out what it does since they don’t SHOW you any example and I’ve been hesitant to take the time to experiment…

To display photos in your sidebar that will link to each of your latest posts, you’ll need the URLs of the photos and the URLs of the posts.
    You can use Image widgets:

Or you can use coding in a text widget:

Great advise – the Images widget worked perfectly, EXCEPT it looks the way it should in Firefox, but on Bing/MS Explorer the sidebar photos are huge and distorted.

I’m guessing I need to set them to a smaller size when I insert them?

Familiar problem: widget resizes image but stupid Explorer won’t understand…

Yes, you need to make copies of the images, downsize them in an image editing application to a resolution of 72 (which is what all browsers/screens display) and to the desired pixel width (maximum for your theme: 188px), upload these copies via Media > Add New, copy their URLs from the “File ULR” field and use those URLs. This way your blog front will also load faster: Explorer apart, the images you’re using now are unnecessarily huge and take too long to load.

Thanks! What I did – which worked – was on the edge of a piece of paper I marked the correct height of the photos on Firefox, then physically measured how many times taller the photos were on Explorer – then did some simple division and came up with 177 for the width. Then I entered the new sizes in the fields in the widget. I guess I measured pretty well since I was only 10 pixels off. But you’ve got a good point about the photo size being excessively big for sidebar thumbnails. At the same time, your recommendation is a bit time consuming, and so far my blog seems to load at a reasonable speed on my computer and internet connection – neither of which are fancy or particularly fast.
