Photos suddenly became HUGE and won't size correctly
-
Recently, with no changes done by myself, my photos from my android phone WP app are coming in at an extremely large size. I’ve always loaded large files, but now they are huge. THEN, when I try to reduce them via the quick % tool on side of the photo during editing, they become skewed and won’t revert to original. I must delete and reenter photo. This post was the worst. http://midwesternplants.org/2014/01/14/the-great-dog-fur-debacle-how-to-attempt-to-remove-fur-from-furniture/
Please let me know what I may have done (setting wise), because it worked perfect b/4 & I did not need to edit or resize my photos b/4. I don’t have time to do that. Want to shoot pix, load and post! Thanks so much for your time!!The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Does the post look better now? Some squared images were stretched because the height was set, I removed this and they look better now.
If you have issues with other posts, please send me the links of them so I can take a closer look at it.
Than kyou!

Thank you Kardotim!!
This post does look better now, but unfortunately, it does not fix the ‘big picture’ (haha!) of future posts.
So, with a bit more research, here’s my take on this. All of my photos taken on my phone are of huge quality as I may need to print them. The quality has never been changed & I don’t want to. I use the android WP app to upload my photos/start a post process. I then use my laptop to add captions and verbiage to the post, then publish. BUT, the upload size to WP HAS changed. These ‘old’ photos were dropped down to 500 x 300 (not exact size, just example) from the 2000 x 1200 size I upload them as. Which is fine and great that it ‘automatically’ did that.
It seems that after Jan 9th (ish), there was a change @ WP that changed all of my post photos to be posted as the 2000×1200 size. I do have a draft post that I tested my theories out on (Called ‘Photo Test’) http://midwesternplants.wordpress.com/?p=3981&preview=true
#1 – in general – they are too large. Is there a wiget or something to make the size go to where they were? Here is an old post, that when viewed, the photos are smaller. These photos on my phone are the large size, but somehow during upload, they were dropped in size. I did NOT make alts to these pix after uploading aside from captions. THIS is what I want to see. =-) http://midwesternplants.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=678&action=edit – How did this change to how it is now?
#2 – When using the % scale on the side, it skews the photos. I’m doing no more than to use this % scale, no other alts.
#3 – Sometimes, even w/o using the % scale, but just using the caption option, the photos get skewed.
This skewing never happened to the old photos, but then again, I didn’t need to change the sizes, as they were the correct size.

I’ve still been working on this…
I was unaware there was a media settings in the main settings area.“The sizes listed below determine the maximum dimensions in pixels to use when adding an image to the Media Library.”
Thumbnail size Width Height 175
Medium size Max Width Max Height 300
Large size Max Width Max Height 1024
This sure looked like the magic area for me to be at. =-) I also thought maybe these are the settings that got inadvertently changed. I again changed these settings reeeally low and uploaded photos to my post “Photo Test”. ( I returned them to default now)
I clearly do not understand the description to this area. Isn’t it supposed to limit my photo’s size? So like b/4, I upload a 2000 pixel photo and it gets reduced to 500 in my media file? They were all added at the same monster size as in the recent past. I give up, for now. -
I saw you’ve created a photo test post with several images. I’ve just checked this and until so far the embedded images look fine. They are all embedded automatically and fit the post content area width.
Or is there a specific image that doesn’t look right to you?

Good day Kardotim!
They may look right to you, but they don’t look right to me! =-)
I do not want them to be this large. I do not want my followers to have to scroll the page to see 1 photo, the landscapes don’t look bad, but the portrait photos require someone to scroll. I DO NOT WANT them to fit the panel, I want them to be smaller like my older posts.
Going back to my last comment, why are my photos being uploaded at the large size now, when before they were stored in my media file at a smaller size? I added 3 photos to the bottom (the apples, tomatoes and leaf) These were uploaded at 2000×1200 but were converted somewhere in between my phone app and WP server to now be at 499×315 (ish) I want this to continue to happen.
What about this setting panel?“The sizes listed below determine the maximum dimensions in pixels to use when adding an image to the Media Library.”
Thumbnail size Width Height 175
Medium size Max Width Max Height 300
Large size Max Width Max Height 1024Why doesn’t it work to lower my incoming/uploaded file to make them smaller!!
Please address this question directly.
Thank you for your time. -
Good day!
I have put forth more investigating into this matter.
My photos after November 30 have been uploaded large.
What had WP changed on December 1st?
What are these media settings for:The sizes listed below determine the maximum dimensions in pixels to use when adding an image to the Media Library.”
Thumbnail size Width Height 175
Medium size Max Width Max Height 300
Large size Max Width Max Height 1024I can’t do any photo posts until this is dealt with, please resolve this!

I am still researching this…
I see there was an update to the WP android app on December 6th. This was the exact time my photos started uploading at full size.
Please look at my media file upload dates.
Thank you. -
Howdy,
I’m researching this further on our end as well. What version of Android and of the WordPress app are you using? I’m working to reliably duplicate it on my end, so we can be on the same page moving forward.
Thanks!

Good day Kraftbj!
Crazy weird issue, eh?!? I’ve been trying to investigate myself, only found details, no solution.
WP App version: 2.5.1
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S4 Model: SPH-L720 Android version: 4.3
I’ve been using the same phone for the life of my blog.
I’ve, to my knowledge, NOT changed any settings related to my phone’s photo quality, or WP settings regarding photos. Well, not since I opened this help ticket. =-)
Thank you for your time!! -
Good day!
I have just spent last night messing with this again.
Here is more info for you.
Before starting, I changed the media settings to only 500 maximum size for adding an image to the media library.
I again took photos with my galaxy s4 phone. I used the WP app to start my post by uploading the photos. I then saved it as a Draft and switched over to my laptop.
http://midwesternplants.org/2014/01/28/arctic-blast-cold-feet-dog-boots/
The photos were yet again huge upon opening the post.
I then removed one and inserted it again from the media library. THAT one was restrained to the 500 max size that I set at the WP website. So, the wording on that setting page:
“The sizes listed below determine the maximum dimensions in pixels to use when adding an image to the Media Library.”
Should really say ‘when adding an image to your post’, NOT when adding an image to the library, as the image is still full size and well over my 500 pixel max size in my media library.
This situation also becomes a problem for media space as if I keep loading these huge files, I’ll need more space in a matter of months.

Good day!
I see there is a WP app update… Is there a fix in the update for my issue perhaps?!?! 😂
Please update me on your progress please!

Hi,
The update may fix the issue. I’ve been running a testing version of the new one and haven’t been able to duplicate this on my end yet. Can you try with the new version and let me know your results?
-
Oh happy day!
So, I didn’t want to update my phone right away, but I did run a test post via my Samsung tablet.
http://midwesternplants.org/2014/01/31/testing-uploading-photos-i-repeat-this-is-only-a-test/
If you read the post, it will direct you through my experiments.
In a nutshell, that size setting IS on my phone app and works. =-) Problem solved.
Although the captions are wonky now, but that’s ok.
Here’s my quick last question: On this theme, ‘twenty-eleven’ do you know what is the smallest pixel width I can go width wise that still fills the screen?
Thank you for your time. I appreciate you!! -
Howdy,
Great to hear!
In looking at the theme specs at http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyeleven/, it looks like 585 pixels is the maximum content width, meaning anything above that would be resized down to it.
Cheers!
