photos too big – thumbnail not available to me
-
On my computer the posted photos are fine, even though I very rarely get offered “thumbnail” as an option. It’s always “fullsize”. However, on my computer at work, and from feedback from other visitors, the photos are enormous. You cannot see them in their entirity.
I just tried to edit a post again but as usual was not offered thumbnail ( if indeed this is what I need )
Please understand I am very, very new at this, so any help to refine my blog is much appreciated.
My blog is: http://sweetrosie.wordpress.com -
I think some of your readers are using a different browser than you are, so that’s why you might not see the difference except at work. I’m using Firefox and all the images seemed to have resized to fit your theme, but if I look at the source, they are very, very big. So big that the thumbnail option isn’t being given to you when upload them. They’re also extremely big in file size; it’s okay for me on ADSL, but I think it would be a problem for anyone on dial up.
To be honest I think you’re lucky that all you’re getting are large pictures. Often when images are too large it will completely mess up for the format of your blog. It looks okay to me, though, so I don’t think you have to worry about that. :)
Here are a couple of things you can do. One is to use some kind of an offline editor to resize them, then upload them. If you look at the optimize your images FAQ, any of those free ones will do it; it’s simple, you just scale them to make them smaller. You could also use one online like Phixr (which I love, btw). Another thing is to upload your images to somewhere like Flickr or Imageshack instead, which should give you automatic thumbnail options; you just use the image icon (#12 below) in your editor to insert it into your post. If you do either of those steps, I think it would make a huge difference. Hope that helps.

Oh goodness! I had no idea about any of the things you have outlined for me.
I will try one of the offline editors, as you suggest. You mentioned Flickr, and I had signed up not so long ago, but confess I didn’t actually know why… I had no real idea of it’s function, I certainly didn’t know I could use it to edit photos. I will try that option too, I might mess up, but I don’t hink the few people who visit my blog will be too bothered and I need the practice.
Thank you very, very much. You were very patient with your explanations.
If you find time, can you explain how people put photos in sequence? For example, when showing a recipe step-by-step. If you think it wiser I will post a new query for this question.
Kind regards -
I love Flickr; I’ve been using it for years and the way you can use it with many other web services (like blogging) is one of its greatest strengths. All it does is it provides one place for you to store all your photos online; your friends and anyone else can go there to see them. Very simple but extremely useful! I’m sorry if I confused you a bit with Flickr, but you actually can’t edit photos using Flickr. What happens is, once you’ve uploaded an image and you look at it, you’ll see a little icon called all sizes. If you click that, then it will give you your image in a few different sizes, and you can select a smaller one and use that size in your blog. It’s a very quick, simple way to make your image smaller without doing any work yourself. That’s why I like it. :)
If you like Flickr, Phixr would definitely be an option for you as well. Phixr is that thing which Flickr isn’t – an online photo editor. All you do is upload your photo to it and there’s a little icon which says scale the photo</strong. Click that and you can select different sizes. It’ll make it smaller, and that’s all you have to do! You can then save it and upload it into your blog, or even send it to your Flickr account. Dead easy.
I can describe the sequence (you don’t need a new thread), but I just wanted to check first how much you wanted to know? The sequence to upload the photo or to resize it and upload it? I don’t want to give you the wrong info. :) We’re all volunteers here in the forums, which means we’re just people who have been using WP for a bit longer than others; I know all this because I went through the same thing about a year ago. So if you need help, looking through the forums is a great place to start, and the FAQs are your friend. :)

Many thanks cjwriter. I stayed up quite late playing with Flickr, and have managed to reduce my photos and send them to my blog! Amazing. I will try Phixr as I do need an editor.
This is probably a dumb question, but, if a photo is a bad one ( not sharp, a bit blurred, just dullish looking) is there a function in editor that can help? Or is it mainly down to the person taking the photo and the camera? I use a little Kodak camera.
When I have made myself comfortable with this part of my problem, I am going to investigate things like borders around the photos, and putting photos in sequence on the page. I blog a bit about food and would like some recipe stages to have accompanying photos.
I’ve rambled on, and I don’t want to waste your time, so thank you once again. The help is invaluable. -
You can clean up photos with software. Photoshop is excellent (and expensive). The GIMP is a free program that does a lot of what Photoshop does, but it’s not the easiest thing in the world to use. I use the built in software that comes with my Linux distro and was able to turn some horrible photos from a low end digital camera into something that I wasn’t embarrassed to post on my blog.
-
Thanks for that, good news. I am going to give it a try (GIMP) I don’t mind a challenge and I am keen to do the best job I can.

The GIMP is great and I’d recommend that as well, but it can be a little daunting if you’re just starting out. Another program which is very good is Serif’s PhotoPlus; their current version is 8.0, but they actually give away a fully-featured older version (6.0) which is a good program to start with. You can adjust the settings and resize images, everything that you’d need to make your images a little clearer. You might like to try that as well and once you get used to it, the GIMP would be the next step up.
Your blog looks good now; I think you’ve still got some images hosted on WP, but it’s loading faster and it looks fine. Posting them in sequence shouldn’t be too hard either; you’d just insert your image before or after a line of text, and then repeat. It’s all a learning process, but once you’ve done it a few times I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it. Have fun blogging. :)
