photos too large for blog? – formatting messed up
-
Hi, I posted multiple photos on my blog and tried to use higher quality images (because previous photos didn’t look so great) but perhaps I went overboard because the formatting of my blog is all skewed and off kilter. This took me hours to format and I can’t imagine redoing but if I have to put lower quality photos on the site or less, I will. Thanks for any help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Instead of using “full-size” when inserting the images, use “large” which will insert the images at the maximum width for your particular theme which is 440px, or redo your images and resize them for a maximum width of 440px.
Also, there is an issue in the first bunch of photos where somehow they have gotten inserted into the “captions” section of the HTML code on one of the images.
If I get a validation report from W3C on this post, http://washingtonsquarepark.wordpress.com/2009/05/01/a-look-at-washington-square-park-this-week-part-iiphotos/ , it reports 258 errors. My suggestion is to wipe everything out of that post and do it again with the images at 440px and make sure that each image is inserted cleanly on a separate like it was in a separate paragraph.
One trick I use for putting multiple images into a single post is to put a letter on a line where I want an image, then hit return, then put another letter, then hit return, etc. That way I can place the cursor on the line with the single letters, insert the images, and then delete the characters. Sometimes if you do not do this, you can end up with an image actually inserted within some of the code for the previous image.

Oh boy! Thank you for your response. I can reconfigure the photos ‘large’ but I don’t know how to make them 440 px. The tip about putting a letter on a line .. that I understand. And can use for the future!
Thank you. -
You would need to resize them in an image editing program before uploading them to get them at 440px.
If I were you, I would put in the work and correct that post. Google and the other search engines will put up with a small amount of errors on a page, but when they reach some magical number, the search engines will flag your blog and not index it anymore. I’ve seen that on more than one occasion.

Hi. I changed everything to medium size and it’s still messed up. I don’t know what to do now. Thank you.

Starting with the second image, the images are all within the caption HTML coding for the first image. See this screen capture: http://allhatnocattle.wordpress.com/files/2009/05/imageissue.jpg . See how they are all overlaid on the grey area?
Those images need to be deleted from the post and then reinserted.

I duplicated your post on my test blog so you can see what it should look like with your theme. Notice the sidebar and theme are not broken.

As soon as you see it let me know so that I can delete the post (it’s set to disallow search engines so it won’t get mixed up with yours).

hi Sacred path, Hmmm. Yes, I see — thank you. So I need to delete from the second image down?
Thanks for duplicating as it should be!
So do you mean I could put the photos in LARGE and it would still work? I’d rather they be large (I think) than medium but I reduced it because I thought that would correct the problem.
I’m still not sure why that happened because I did delete the old when I added in the new but I was a bit haphazard about it.
Thanks so much!
Cathryn.

Large should be just fine, just not “full size”.
Captions has introduced another level of complexity to the code, and I’ve seen others with the same problem, so you are not alone.
If you have problems and it still won’t work out right, use the contact form on my blog and then what I can do is email you a plain text file with all the code in it so that you can just delete everything in the post and then paste the stuff from the text file into the HTML tab in your editor.

Actually I just noticed something. Go to settings > media and for “large” enter 440 in each of the size boxes and then click “save changes” before inserting the images again.
-
I just noticed the first image “large” is 1024 x 768 – won’t that be much too large anyway?
I’m not sure I understand the above but I can try doing it. Thank you for your help.

In your dashboard, click on settings in the left-hand navigation. Then click on “media”. You will see settings there for thumbnail, medium and large. Change both the horizontal and vertical fields for “large” to 440. Then click the “save changes” button.
That way when you insert the images and select “large” wordpress will keep them at 440px wide when you insert them.
