Photos using too much space

I have a photoblog called SHUTTERBUG’s BLISS. It’s a sequel to SHUTTERBUG’s DELIGHT, which ran out of space after posting 1076 images. For some reason, BLISS has run out of space after only 477 pics. I have tried to go in and resize the images, but the more I do this the less pace I have left! Clearly I am doing something wrong here. Do I need to delete the images, resize them and then upload again? How do I address this? THANKS FRIENDS.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Can you please give us the URL of the site in question?

For some reason, BLISS has run out of space after only 477 pics.

That is very easy to believe if you shoot photos in high resolution. A high-res photo on a modern digital camera can easily exceed 8MB in size. 400 photos at that file size would come out at 3.2GB.

But an 8MB photo would be much, much bigger than any computer screen can display, never mind the maximum image size in most themes. That is why we recommend you optimize images for the web before you upload them to your site:

    Optimize Your Images

I have tried to go in and resize the images, but the more I do this the less pace I have left!

That is expected. When you edit an image in the media library, a copy is created with the edits, but the original version is also still kept so that it’s possible to revert the changes should you want to later. So storage use would then be the original image + whatever the size is of the edited version.

If you want to resize images to reduce storage use, you’ll need to resize the images offline in an image editor like Photoshop, and then replace the version currently in the media library with the resized version, deleting the bigger file in the process.

No, I did not see this reply. What a pain in the ass that will be! Sure wish I’d known this when I started the blog. Here’s the thing: I am using the exact same camera on the exact same settings as the previous blog. Cannot imagine how they are suddenly so much larger… Thanks so much for your clear, prompt reply. Guess I don’t have a choice in the matter but to delete everything and start from scratch! Annoying!

  • @lastcre8iveiconoclast you’re also welcome to create another sequel blog, or upgrade. The personal plan will double your space.
