PHP Update errors

    Twice in the last month my site has errored out when I’ve attempted to follow the PHP Update prompts. Twice Bluehost has had to restore my site from before the updates. Is there a fundamental incompatibility between my themes or site structure and PHP updates?
    Here is the message on my dashboard:
    PHP Update Required! Move upMove downToggle panel: PHP Update Required
    WordPress has detected that your site is running on an insecure version of PHP.

    What is PHP and how does it affect my site?
    PHP is the programming language we use to build and maintain WordPress. Newer versions of PHP are both faster and more secure, so updating will have a positive effect on your site’s performance.

    Your site is not hosted here, on WordPress.com, but using the open source WordPress.org software at another hosting provider.

    For general help with the version of WordPress you’re using, you can ask the WordPress.org community over at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
