Picture Captions
-
My captions are all on the left of my pictures, despite them being centered when I write my blog. What’s going on?
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

For individual images with captions, those should show below the images. For galleries, they should shot at the bottom of the image. Can you give us a link to a post where this is happening and we are happy to take a look?
Perhaps you have a draft post where this is happening, or you can create a test draft post that we could look at if you wish.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Hi
Thanks for your quick response. An example of where the caption is in the correct place in a gallery, but incorrectly placed on a single image is at https://dearsoupdragon.wordpress.com/2023/05/22/palencia-to-tordesillas/
When I create the post the single image caption appears centrally under the picture. When published, it moves to the left of the image.
I’ve created a draft post here to show how I write the blog https://wordpress.com/post/dearsoupdragon.wordpress.com/5960
Any help with this is hugely appreciated.
Kind regards
Alan

Hi there – Thanks so much for sharing these examples. Let’s go through these one by one.
where the caption is in the correct place in a gallery, but incorrectly placed on a single image is at https://dearsoupdragon.wordpress.com/2023/05/22/palencia-to-tordesillas/
Check out this example: https://d.pr/v/aW4LP8
In that example I point out that the image is not inside the Gallery block above, so the caption appears differently. Once I move the image into the gallery, the caption appears like the other images in the gallery.

I see exactly what you mean. I noticed that the same happens on some other themes as well. I looked and was able to find an open issue for this: https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/75934
I do not have an estimate for when the bug will be fixed, but I have added your site to the report.
I have what might be a workaround for now. Check this out: https://d.pr/v/DS1UzU
It looks like when we remove the caption and put a paragraph block directly under the image, it puts the text very close to the bottom of the image. Will this work for you as a temporary solution for new posts?

Hi
Thanks for your help, much appreciated. If and when the bug gets fixed, will it apply retrospectively to all the posts on my blog?
Best wishes
Alan

Hi there,
The fix should retroactively align the captions since it essentially would be addressing the cause for the misalignment. It won’t be for the posts that you use the workaround since you’re using a different block, but hopefully, those caption alignments will continue to look fine and you won’t need to touch those particular posts.
We’ll keep in touch with any updates regarding this bug. Thank you! -
Hi
Many thanks for your help. I may look to update the theme to something a bit more modern when we get home (currently in a motorhome in Portugal). Not sure my internet connection is good enough for heavy WordPress shenanigans.
All the best. Alan.
