Picture size in post and gallery

  • Unknown's avatar

Is there a way to set the size of picture in post and gallery?
I have tried to use wp-admin and in display settings set the picture sizes to full screen, but even then when I update the blog post, the pictures are not the original size but a very small version. The only way now to see full size is to scroll down for each picture in the gallery and click ‘view in full size’ for each picture, which is really bad.

    Thanks in advance,

    Viktor

  • Hi

Here’s a page that provides a lot of details on photo galleries:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery/

Specifically, take a look at these two sections, towards the bottom of the article:
    Gallery Shortcode
    Manage Gallery Styles Individually

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Melimdaheit,

Thanks for your answer. I have searched that page through before including the “carousel view” and “Image galleries carousel” links where i would expect this info. Unfortunately I have not found any setting to remove cropping in carousel view :-(

  • Hi

I’m not sure I’m understanding your question correctly. Are the images displaying too small in the carousel view (which is what I thought from your first question), or are the images being cropped (as in, parts of the image cut off and not displayed)?

Can you point to a specific page/gallery on your site that you are having trouble with?

The Photo Carousel will resize images dynamically to the screen size it is shown on. Looking at your first post in English letemsvetemweb.wordpress.com/2016/12/19/22-11-1-12-2016-easter-island I don’t see any image cropping taking place in the Carousel when I resize my browser screen.

Can you take a screenshot of what you see and upload it to your Media Library and then share the link so we can have a look? Thanks https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

    Hi justjennifer,

Thanks for replying and I’m sorry to take so long to react – I’m travelling and often out of reach.

The images do fit the screen correctly, I might have explained myself wrongly – the images are not cropped (not missing any part), but their resolution is greatly dimished. In fact they all get the with of 1000px on my laptop screen – if I look at the urls the carousel is using, it seems to be reducing their resolution to 1000px width, the height is dynamic I expect.
    <img src="https://letemsvetemweb.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/chi_0633.jpg?w=1000&h=&crop=1" itemprop="image" style="width: 100%; height: 100%;">.
While it is nice to set the resolution lower for tablets and mobile phones etc., the pictures are blurred on my screen and I would like to have higher resolution.

Hope I have explained myself better. Looking forward to your reply, even if it would be that there is no way to do it :)

    Thanks,

    Viktor

Hi Viktor – let me test this a bit and come back to you. We are having thunderstorms all this week which keeps me offline. Meanwhile, happy travels.

Hi again, sorry for the length, but I hope this will help clarify.

“Full size” in Media Sizes does not mean the size of the image you uploaded, but rather inserting the image to fit the full width of your theme’s content column. Publication has a content column of 612 pixels wide, but Featured Images are 2000 pixels wide.

As I mentioned earlier, the Carousel size changes depending on the size of the screen it is being viewed on. For example, for the same image you mentioned in your above reply as “w=1000” on your laptop, the link I see says “w=1200” on my 1280 pixel wide PC monitor.

You’ll also notice in the Carousel there is a link to the full size image (“View Full Size”) which when you click on it *will* open the image at the size you uploaded it. However, most browsers will first resize that image to fit the current browser window and to see it at the original image size, you will need to click on it again.

The best advice I can give you is to resize and optimize your images in an offline image editor before you upload them to your site. An overall width of 1600 pixels is a relatively good size. This has the added benefit of preserving image clarity because there is less resizing going on and it also maximizes your storage space.

Another option is to disable the default Carousel in WP Admin Media Settings and then link your Gallery to “Media File” instead. This won’t change anything as far as inserting a Gallery in your post, but when someone clicks on an image it will open the Media file in the browser and not the Carousel. The very real downside to this option is that it makes navigation much less friendly for your site visitors.

Let me know if you need anything else. :)

    Hi,

thank you for looking into it!
I’ve tried to disable Carousel previously, but I did not really like it – the carousel is a nice feature even when the picture clarity gets diminshed. And yes, there is the option to see full size, even though it is painful as it opens new tab for each picture.
I wish there was some settings to configure the cropping. But there is not and I’ll survive with that :D
