Picture size in twenty eleven theme

    Hi,

I’m a new user and this is probably a stupid question, but my blog shrinks the pictures I upload even though they are more than 2M on my computer. Is it because of the theme (twenty eleven) I’m using? That the page is just not wide enough? If this is the case, could someone recommend a wider one, can be also premium with a similar simple, black&white layout?

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. When you say 2M, do you mean 2Megabyte (Mb) file size or 2 megapixel images?

The Twenty Eleven Theme cannot display pictures wider than 585 pixels on posts or pages, 848 pixels for attachment pages and 1000 pixels for header images. The widest display size I’ve spotted on a WordPress.com theme is 1200 pixels.

A 1200 pixel jpeg file has a size of around 350 kilobytes, significantly smaller than 2 Megabytes. If you’re uploading 2Mb images, you’re uploading images way bigger than your blog (and in fact most computer monitors) can display and essentially you’re simply wasting storage space in your media library.

I know this isn’t what you asked, but I’ve fielded many threads in this forum from people who uploaded too large images and found themselves running out of storage space in no time. To prevent that, start optimising your images before uploading them to the media library by resizing them to no larger than the maximum width your theme can display. You can also use a website like http://www.jpegmini.com/ to further reduce the file size so you don’t run out of storage space too fast.

If you’re looking for a theme that can display larger images on posts or pages, I suggest you browse the theme gallery with a filter for blogs optimised for photography. They tend to have the widest image display sizes: https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/subjects/photography/

    Hi,

Thanks very much for your reply. I didn’t realise I was using all my space with huge pictures (yes I meant 2Mb), I just thought I need to upload them in as good quality (aka big size) than possible. Good tip, thanks.

Do you by any chance remember which theme it was with the 1200 pixel display size?

  • Not specifically, no, but most of the photography themes have wider displays. Also look for a one-column layout. Those themes don’t have a sidebar, or they have a hidden sidebar, so there’s more space for visual content.

The column widths and maximum image display sizes are usually at the very bottom of the theme’s support doc, though not all the themes display those specs.
