With a free WordPress.com blog you get about 3 GB of storage for files and images, for free, over the lifetime of your blog.

If you purchase a space upgrade then you pay for the additional space you use per year, per blog.

It’s similar to what you do if you were renting a storage unit: you get X amount of space for which you pay each year (or each month). In your storage unit, you can put in a small box of stuff, or you can fill it to the ceiling; the rent per year (or per month) is the same. If you don’t make the rent payments, then your storage space is gone.

I have not looked at each and every picture on your blog, but if you can answer these questions, perhaps we can track down the issue.

What does it say when you go to this link:

I have 4550 pictures in one media library, which use approximately 8% of my original free storage space.

Have you uploaded full-sized images directly from your camera? I notice that you have deleted some of your earliest pictures—were you trying to make more space for newer photos?

Properly compressing photos for the web will definitely allow many many pictures: 3 GB is a lot of space. Did you start your blog by not doing that? The pictures in your newer post all seem to be a nice compact size for fast loading and conserving storage space.
