Pictures are still not crisp even after resizing before inserting them into post
-
I am hoping someone will be able to help me.I have checked the forum and if I am reading correctly, I should be changing my image size to the best size for the theme that I am using. My current theme is Choco. So, I have converted my photos to the size that is best according to the information here: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/23/maximum-image-width/. However, my pictures are still not as crisp as they are when I first download them from my camera. Is there something I am doing wrong or is this the best that I can expect them to be? Thank you.

If you’ve resized a .jpg or .jpeg image, you’ll get loss of quality because you’re re-compressing an image that is already compressed. I’d suggest saving it as a .PNG file instead and then uploading it for your post.
By the way, I hope you’re resizing copies of your photos not the originals that came straight out of the camera!

Oh and on the resizing…this is going to show my ignorance, but here goes: when I plug my camera into my laptop, PMB software is what pops up and is how I am transferring my pics from the camera to the laptop. I right click on the image and select ‘convert & resize’ and then manually enter the image size that I want to use. Does this sound correct or am I doing it all wrong? Thank you so much!

Note that the info in my post was incorrect: either I made a mistake when I first tested the theme or they changed something after they launched it. Maximum width for Choco is 621px (the rest of the column width is ttken up by the grey borders). Try this size and see if it improves things.

@klutzymama Have you a Sony camera? If so then PMB is the software that came with your camera, yes? I looked it up and it seems that it compresses everything for viewing easily and for email… which would mean that it’s at too low a resolution and you might possibly be lowering it even more by resizing.
May I suggest that you see if your software program has any preferences for what resolution images can be saved at and, if you have the option, change it to something higher than for email. (The default for email and for screen resolution is 72 pixels per inch, you’d do better with 100 ppi or more). They don’t have to be huge for WordPress and in fact, huge ones take up a lot of space in the media library and also put an strain on people’s abilities to open them, but they do need to be a reasonable size.
Personally, I’d download via the software you’ve got but would then resize them in another program like Photoshop Elements (which is what I use) or even GIMP which is free.

I use Gimp – works well – first I scale the image then sharpen it a bit – there is a function called “unsharpen” that actually sharpens the image – all images loose something when scaled so a photographer friend explained the need to sharpen an image after the scale – it also seems to help the color a bit a tmes.

Thank you all so much for your responses. I did try changing the photos to PNG and that seemed to return some of the clarity. I am going to try each of these suggestions and will report back on what works the best for me. Thanks again!
