Pictures Disappearing
-
I recently moved from a self hosted site to wordpress.com. Several of my photos are disappearing from both new and old blogs even though all of the photos show up in my media library. When I click on the ? mark in place of the photo, the message says to contact technical support immediately. All I can find is this forum … I’m not even sure how someone will contact me back with an answer. I’ve tried this before and gotten no response.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I have notified the support staff for you. They’ll reply to this topic shortly :)

Hi there,
Can you please provide a link to one of the posts where the images are disappearing? It’s possible that on import the image links weren’t rewritten to point to the WordPress.com media library, so they were still pointing to the self-hosted site’s library. If the self-hosted site recently went offline, that would explain why the images no longer show, but I’ll need to see an affected post to confirm.
Can you also please give the self-hosted site’s URL, and confirm if it’s still online or not?

Hi. Thank you for the help. This is one of the posts with missing pics. https://rashellbud.wordpress.com/2017/01/22/six-minutes-of-escape/
It was originally posted on my old site: http://www.sausmus.com.
The site it offline as of March 3. -
Do you understand that when you link to an image that is hosted on another site and that site is suspended the image will no longer display?
See here please http://www.sausmus.com/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi

I get that part, but when I moved the blog, it looked like all of the pictures in my library came with it. The old blogs themselves are showing on my new site and some pictures show while others do not. So, I am confused … and I am not especially bright when it comes to websites and tech … so thanks for helping me in my ignorance.

So, in order for an image to show on your site, it needs to be hosted online. Webpages don’t work like a document file where the actual image is embedded and becomes part of the file. Webpages only contain a link to the actual image that’s hosted somewhere else. In the case of WordPress, images are hosted in the media library.
The file you used to import your content here didn’t contain any images. It only contained links to where those images were stored in the other site’s media library. When you imported your content here, the importer should have fetched the images from there and add them to the media library here.
That does not always happen, though. Or it does happen, but the links appearing in your posts are not rewritten to point to the new media library.
It looks like on your site it’s the second case that happened – the files were imported to your library, but your site still thinks the images are in the old site’s library. We should be able to fix this for you. But we won’t be able to import any images that didn’t make it across, as the old site is no longer online.
I’ve asked a developer to fix those image links on your site. I’ll let you know as soon as they’ve done that, though it probably won’t be before Tuesday next week.

Okay, we’ve been able to fix up most of your posts, but there are about 30 posts where the images were not imported to your media library, and because the original site is no longer online we’re not able to fetch those.
If you are still able to get the old site back online or if you have a full backup of that site we can try importing those for you as well, but otherwise you’ll need to fix those posts manually.
The posts we weren’t able to fix are:

Hi! Thank you for your help, and sorry I was not able to acknowledge it sooner. I do not have a full back up and the site is not longer accessible. Looks like I will have to go the manual route. Thanks again.
