Pin It Button with Counter
-
Hello,
The Official Pin It Button is inconsistent on my blog. On some posts it shows a counter, like the Twitter and Facebook buttons. On other posts the counter is not present. Can this be resolved so the counter is always visible? The data is valuable.
Thank you

Sure. Here are a couple posts with the Pin It Counter:

http://confessionsofafrostingfanatic.com/2015/06/11/sweet-layers-review/
Here’s are a couple without:

From what I can tell, the problem is throughout the site. Some posts have the Pinterest button with counter, while others simply don’t. The same applies to mobile viewing as well.
Thanks

I’m guessing that the counter may not even appear unless or until the button is clicked. I tagged this thread for a Staff response. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

Okay, thanks for escalating this query. I know for certain the URL below showed counts before. It’s the data I wanted to check today.

Hi frostingfanatic,
After a bit of research and testing I learned that if the count is 0 the counter won’t show. However, if the count is more than zero you’ll see the count button. This is the default Pinterest behavior.
If you look back at this post you’ll see the count is now showing as 1 (I pinned it)

Hi,
I do understand what you’re saying. However, it doesn’t seem to resolve the problem in all cases.
1. For the URL provided, I noted at least 7 Pins last time I checked. I don’t understand how the number has now decreased.
2. I pin the majority of my photos to my Pinterest board to help drive additional traffic. Thus, most counts showed 1.
Please advise. Thanks!

No, I haven’t made any adjustments to the app in several months, and this problem is recent. The accounts in my Publicize box are Google+ and Twitter.

Hi @frostingfanatic,
I have looked into this a bit more and have some more details. We are getting the pin count from Pinterest directly. In looking at search results for things like “Pinterest count off” I’ve found that this is a common issue across the Internet and not just here at WordPress.com.
Another thing to note is that the pin count for the page is different than the pin count for the images. For example the page:
http://confessionsofafrostingfanatic.com/2015/06/04/coconut-cream-cheese-pound-cake/
shows the number of times the direct link to the page was shared.
The image count:
https://confessionsofafrostingfanatic.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/coconut-cream-cheese-pound-cake.jpg?w=400&h=400
shows the number of times that particular image was sharedTo confirm, when you are sharing on Pinterest are you sharing the page or the images?

Okay, the difference between counts makes sense. When I share from my blog post, I copy the URL and pin the image(s).
So, the image share count for http://confessionsofafrostingfanatic.com/2015/06/04/coconut-cream-cheese-pound-cake/ is higher than the page share. And that’s the number that fluctuates.
Am I understanding correctly?

HI frostingfanatic,
I think you got it. The page share count is what shows in the share button counter. This count will often be lower than the share count of the individual images on the page.
For example, if the main image is shared 10 time but the whole page is only shared once the counter will say “1” not “10” or “11”.
