Ping Backs from others only?

  I keep getting ping-backs whenever I link to a previous post. My first thought is to delete them since they seem rather annoying. Is it possible to change a setting so you only get ping-backs when someone else links to an entry? Or am I completely wrong and having them is actually a good thing so readers can find other similar posts?
