Ping List
-
Can we create a ping list for wordpress.com, or is that meant for wordpress.org only?
ThanksThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
WordPress.com blogs enjoy automattic pings via Ping-o-matic http://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/ though I do not know exactly which services are pinged for us. Perhaps someone else can enlighten?
-
After doing further research I don’t think it’s possible to add a ping list to wordpress.com.
I think what I’ve been reading applies to wordpress.org installs. As it reqiures going to
>setting>writing>update services. which is not present inthe wordpress.com dashboard. -
@joer223
Those instructions are not for wordpress.COM blogs. They are for wordpress.ORG blogs and do not apply to your blog. We cannot add a ping list to wordpress.com blogs and we do not need one. See this > http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2010/02/11/reach-out-and-ping-someone/It’s important to be aware that most bloggers out there referring to “wordpress” are actually referring to wordpress.ORG. They do not have clue as to what the differences between wordpress.ORG free software installs which require hiring a web host , and free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM are. Many think they do and spread misleading information.
As you are involved in this blogathaon project and attempting to become both a blogger and a blogging tips blogger overnight ie. in 1 month’s time, and as you are so eager you are bound to be mislead over and over again. So I suggest that you read this entry in support documentation and bookmark a link to it as well. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

@TT, Yes, upon further reading, and exploring my dashboard I realized it was meant for wordpress.org. I certainly hope my eagerness would work toward my detriment. I know haven’t been at this very long, and in no way consider myself a success, far from it, I feel I am failing. I try to research what I publish, and in no way want to mislead the few people who have read what I published. As I’ve said time and again I have a lot to learn.
And I’m very critical of my self when I make a mistake, I find it unacceptable when I make a mistake. And try to rectify it as quickly as possible. I know I’m not going to become a blogger and blogging tips blogger overnight. I’m trying to take it one day at time, one step at time, one post at a time. I’m trying my best, and don’t know what else to do. -

“How to blog” seems to be the most popular subject on the web to blog about. What is it? And, how can someone new to blogging, know enough to actual help newbies? I’v been blogging only 11 months but I couldn’t begin to call myself an expert blogger even though I was a writer and editor for 20 years.
-
@newsy1, I find your remark to be disparaging, and certainly unencouraging. I never claimed to be an expert in any sense of the word. Some people acquire knowledge, and learn quicker than others. Am I one of those people? that remains to be seen. But I don’t think it is wrong to take what I have learned and pass it on. I research what I write and read many sources in doing my research.

@joer223
What I was trying to point out to you is:
1. Any research you do on “wordpress” that is not specific to wordpress.COM will probably be information that pertains to wordpress.ORG.
2. As you lack blogging experience and knowledge of how to use wordpress.COM software masterfully you will be susceptible to being mislead.
3. If you bookmark the support documentation link describing the differences between wordpress.COM and wordpress.ORG you will be susceptible to being mislead.
4. We can all report research but if we lack the expertise to discern which information has integrity and which does not have integrity and cannot be applied to our software then we can go off track. Your eagerness and total lack of experience may incline you to go off track very easily for the following reasons:(a) You have not mastered the use of wordpress.com software.
(b) You are not clear on the differences between wordpress.COM and wordpress.ORG software and blogs.
(c) You are not aware of how linking works and not at all skilled in linking practices.
(d) You are not able to ascertain which blogs are authoritative in the wordpress.COM blogging tips niche and have posts with high quality content worth linking to, and how to discern which blogs founded by newbies like yourself based on second hand information and not backed by personal experience.
(e) You don’t seem to comprehend that passing on secondhand information is only admirable, if you have actually used the information over a sustained period of time and proven that it does have integrity. -
I missed a word above in this point:
3. If you bookmark the support documentation link describing the differences between wordpress.COM and wordpress.ORG you will be less susceptible to being mislead.

Should I just give up and quit? Should I blog about the family dog, and what it’s like to be a recovering crack cocaine user?
-
@joer223, do not worry about pinging or any of the SEO stuff. WordPress.COM takes care of that for you, and as far as the search engines go, wordpress has all that covered and covered very well. WordPress.COM blogs enjoy a huge SEO advantage due to the way wordpress has things set up and due to the global tags pages.
Just concentrate on blogging about your passion whatever that happens to be. Read up on categories and tags in the support pages and create and assign appropriate tags and categories to your posts and you will be well on your way. Here are a few links to support documents that you might want to look over.

Also, there is a wealth of very good information on Timethief’s blog about blogging, and she covers the full gamut from novice to expert.

A blog about recovering from anything, would be a personal account that many can relate to to and would be very interesting.
-
@TSP what I would like to blog about is blogging and how to be successful at it. I admire Timethief, and almost live on her site, she even gave me the opportunity to guest post on her site, which I was very happy to do, at the same time I was very humbled by her offer to do so. I feel she put a certain amount of confidence in my ability to write, and I tried my best not disappoint her. I don’t want to give up my blog,
I want to learn all I can to help people. I mean we all have to start someplace, even Timethief was a novice at one time, now she is prolific! of course I know it takes a very long time to do what she does, but when does time begin? Doesn’t a great journey begin with the first step?I can’t refute any point she made about my inexperience, and lack of knowledge. But
I have to start somewhere, and I’m not trying to deceive the few readers I have, I make it known to them that I too am a beginner. And the few who have commented seem to think I have some potential in blogging, and could at some point in time, given experience and knowledge be successful at it. Timethief makes it sound almost shameful to disseminate secondhand knowledge. I think everyone disseminates secondhand knowledge, how else do we learn? We learn from someone what they have learned from someone else. And I understand too that experience pays a big part in disseminating that knowledge. I feel like my confidence
was dealt a detrimental blow, and I have no business trying to be a blogger who blogs about blogging. I wish only the best of success for Timethief and all the people
who work the forums, and to all fellow wordpress.com bloggers. -
I wasn’t trying to learn about using a ping list to pass it on, or to deceive anyone who may read my blog, as a way to increase traffic to their blog. I wanted to learn about for my own personal use.
-
I’m sorry as well, it is just that starting a new blog and an unknown topic also can be sort-of a double whammy. But, you also have to have a tough skin blogging. My blog is very opinionated and people rant at me all the time. So what? If that is what you want to write about then do it. Don’t let other people sway what you want to do. Writers write period.
-
Should I just give up and quit?
Of course not! Your are a writer and writers write period, just like newsy1 says.
There are “sprinters” who dash out of the starting gate and a year later they are the owners of dead blogs.
There are “stayers” who move a slower pace but their blogs live on tear after year.
Don’t be a sprinter.
