Pingback Approval Questions
-
I ran into a situation and I hope I can explain it. Yesterday I wrote a blog entry to be posted today. In it, I linked to a previous post so any new readers could learn what I was referring to. Shortly after the post “went live”, I received an email asking me to approve a pingback. I read that I (The Birding Bunch) am the author of the pingback/comment.
So, exactly, what does approving this do; merely put it in the comments? Does it somehow disable the link I put today’s entry if I Trash it? And if I choose to link to an earlier post on my own blog, why must an approval process be needed? My comments do not require approval on my blog. Also, if on the wild chance that another person links to one of my posts, what occurs if I do not allow it? I want to keep the comment area for comments alone. I did read a previous Question about that, which explained what can be done to keep them off.
Sorry for all the questions. Here I think I have figured all I needed to know at WordPress, then something new pops up.
Thank you for your help. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Pingbacks are treated the same way as comments. You can safely send self-pings to Trash if you do not wish to approve and post them. You can also stop self-pings.
My comments do not require approval on my blog.
Are you ware that over 80% of what is submitted as so-called comments to the WordPress.com site every day is spam? Are you aware that everything that is posted to your blog has either a positive or negative affect on your blogs brand? Are you aware that auto-posted spam can have a negative affect on your blog’s pagerank? I suggest you moderate all first time comments because as it stands blog with open anonymous comments are spam targets.

Yes, I am aware based on what is placed in spam on a regular basis by Akismet. And yes, I already moderate all first time commenters.
The sentence you quoted I see I did not make my thought clear. I should have written “My OWN comments…..”

Ahhh … now I comprehend. :) If you want to prevent self-pings you can. I don’t bother stopping self-pings. I post some self-pings I think are important breadcrumb trails for my readers and others I send to Trash.
