Hello I have asked a few times over on .org regarding pingbacks, and yet to get a reply or resolve, so therefore I ask here.

    Hi

Yes this is yet another pingback/trackback not working post :)

I have checked that all the boxes are ticked, I have disabled and enabled various plugins, tried different themes, installed wordpress again on a clean database, asked my host if they know anything, tested on other sites hosted else where etc.

But still pingback is not happening at all. It used to do but not any more on my two sites.

I would like to join the fun over at https://dailypost.wordpress.com their daily prompts and weekly photos. But nothing is happening it is like I’m Billy-no-mates shouting in and nobody is listening to me :)

The two sites I’m having problems with are

    http://random.woollypigs.com

    Any ideas?

    Many thanks

    Anyone?

I bump this up again since it sinks quickly on this forum, anyone?

When we need Staff help with issues Volunteers cannot resolve like this one we type modlook into the sidebar tags on our forum threads. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then we subscribe to this thread so we are notified when they respond. Thanks @timethief – didn’t know that.

  • Heyo, I noticed your comments are coming through with an https link, but when I try to visit it, I get a warning / privacy error.

Can you double check SSL for your site, or possibly just set your site settings to http?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello Velda, thanks for looking into this.

I do not have ssl/https on my sites.

Though have noticed that my Jetpack “Subscription emails” sometimes got send out with https links. Contacted the jetpack team, where James from there, said:

Interesting, I think it *might* be another symptom of this: https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/issues/1435

Do you also have problem with plugin auto-updates?

I found the same problem under your site in our system (a mismatch with HTTPS) and manually corrected it, so it should be good in the emails now.

Not have not had any problems with auto-updates.

    Thanks.

  • OK, was that recent or a while ago?

Can you double check the two URL settings under Dashboard > Settings > General? Make sure they match, and make sure neither includes https. If they don’t match and you have a reason for that, let me know.

If you have to make a change, save it, and you may want to go ahead and reconnect Jetpack too. Just do this on the “random” site for now.

    Hi

It happened on and off over the last few months. James came back to early last week.

The URL in “Dashboard > Settings > General” are the same and don’t have https. (on both sites)

    Thanks

  • OK. We’ll keep digging.

You mentioned in the ticket you need help with the “random” site — are you making any posts to the challenges there or are those only coming from the photos site?

If they’re coming only from the Photos site, can you check its settings?

  • Unknown's avatar

    HI

I hope to take part in the Weekly Photo Challenge with the photo site and the Daily Prompts with the random site. Both sites have never resulted in a pingback to dailypost (but other sites in the past)

    Thanks

  • Okay. I saw some pingbacks from the photos site and those were the ones that mentioned https.

Did you check the Dashboard > General > URL-related settings for it? It’s not on Jetpack so we can’t see it here.

    Hi

Where do you see these https? I have looked in my rss and db (via phpmyadmin) and only found https in some of the links to sites that I have linked to, like: http://www.wikipedia.org etc. Or “http://s.wordpress.org/images/browsers/chrome.png” in the wp_options table.

When I noticed the https, that was when I looked at the Subscriber Email from jetpack and saw the https link in there. The Subscriber Email only gets send out to a few readers, so not often checked/read.

It changed from https/http as various update on jetpack happened, e.g. one week it was http, then another it was back to https.

Then I noticed that pingback didn’t work, when I found the dailpost.wordpress.com site and wanted to join over there.

Never seen https or used https in/on any of my sites, other than when I link to a site that is https.

Though was thinking about it a few months ago, could that be it? Should I stop thinking about it and then the problem will go away? :)

Here’s links to some screenshots of the settings on photos. (just change photos to random as the settings are the same :) )

  • Okay, I’d dug around a bit and saw that it can change to https if there’s a difference between two URL settings. That’s under Dashboard > General > Settings.

So, while I hate to keep bringing this up, I wasn’t sure whether I’ve got a positive confirmation that the settings are right.

Would you please confirm whether they say the same thing there on your Photos blog? You might copy one into the other so they definitely match. Then save your changes, and then let us know when you’ve added another post that should pingback here.

Yes, I have checked in the “Dashboard > General > Settings”, as you can see it here – http://random.woollypigs.com/stuff/Screenshot_photos_GenralSettings.png – that is how it looks for me.

Just tried to get these posts to ping

    http://photos.woollypigs.com/travels_touring/our-kitchen-window/
    http://photos.woollypigs.com/travels_touring/devonshire-tea/

Even added the url that I wanted ping to in the “Send trackbacks to:” section of my post.

    Thanks

  • Just tried to get these posts to ping

To clarify, did you make new posts after verifying those settings?

Also don’t worry about a “send trackbacks to” setting. You should simply be able to link back.

Do you have any plugins that could possibly be interfering?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I checked before and after and even tried to write a whole new post, so not just an update of the post.

I have removed all themes (except TwentyFifteen, which I have never edited), used old and new and different themes. I have removed all plugins, deleted the DB in phpmyadmin, installed a fresh version of wordpress, ticked nothing/changed nothing on the default install. Tried to ping before installing/activating Akismet and or JetPack. And yet it still no ping is coming across, to dailpost or elsewhere.

Very helpful people over at JetPack reported that for some reason my site was marked as https, which I don’t use. Very helpful people on wordpress.com reports that they can see that the pingbacks are send over as https.

On random I got these plugins running : Akismet, Google XML Sitemaps, Jetpack by WordPress.com, WP-Optimize.

On photos I got these plugins running : Akismet, Jetpack by WordPress.com, WP-Optimize, Wordfence Security.

All these plugins have worked happily in the past with pingback.

I don’t know how wordpress do pingback behind the scenes, what features/functions/db/php/settings or do they talk to a third party. Have my sites have been banned/blocked elsewhere? How do you see my pingback, like how I would see it in the comment area or elsewhere?

    Thanks.

  • I just thought of something.

Pingbacks should work between your two blogs, so if you’ll write a post that links to a post on other site (or even link to an old post on your site) you should be able to see a pingback in your wp-admin comments area. You can look to see if https appears there, too.

If it does, you could consider temporarily turning off one plugin at a time to see whether any one of them is causing the issue. Want to give that a try?
