  Can someone explain what a pingback is and if I do get a pingback what value does this have for my site and what value is it for the person that I approve?

  If you are referring to the site in your user name, it is not hosted here at wordpress.COM so you should head over to http://wordpress.ORG/support/ because we use different software here.

  Thanks, when it said web site on my profile I put my personal web site.

  But that doesn’t help us help you. Since there are multiple versions of wordpress and since this forum is only for blogs hosted here at wordpress.COM, we can’t help you unless we know that you are hosted here and using the software that is used here. So despite the fact that the profile says “website” what really should be there is your wordpress.COM blog, if you have one.

  I have the same question, and my blog is posted here at the .COM. So, what IS a pingback, and what should it mean for me and my posts/pages?

  It’s a linkback – to let you and your readers know that someone has linked to your post. It helps you keep track of who is talking about your post and helps your readers follow the discussion.

  But be aware that some pingbacks are spam – the site linking to you isn’t commenting on your post they are just trying to get traffic. So make sure (as with all comments) you check it’s OK.

  I got my first pingback the other day, and WordPress marked it as spam. It was, in fact, a legitimate site I’m happy to have linking to me.

  What are you supposed to do with these things? I marked it as not spam, and displayed the comment, then realized that that really doesn’t serve any useful purpose, so I hid the comment. Now it’s showing up as needing review, though, and won’t go away. If my blog gets busy, as I hope it will, I can foresee that this sort of thing would really clutter up the list of comments that need to be reviewed.

  Look at the sticky, 8 Things, at the top of the thread. That will tell you how to change your profile.

  As for pingbacks – you can turn them off either on individual posts or sitewide. I don’t do anything with them – I just let them display.
