pingbacks and trackbacks

  I received email saying I had new pingback from another site. I checked out the site and I was confused. I am not sure how this pingback thing works. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? They really don’t give you enough info in email to make a decision to approve or not. Can anyone help me understand what a pingback is? I never had a blog before so be patient with this newbie.
