Pingbacks not working
-
Hi,
my blog has stopped sending pingbacks to other blogs. This was a hard switch from 100% to 0%. This change occured somewhere between October 18th (last day it worked) and 21st.
I checked the discussion settings and also the ones for individual posts; nothing suspicious here, the flags are set.
I evaluated the situation with several befriended bloggers: There are no pingbacks in their spam folder.
Receiving pingbacks and self-pingbacks are no problem.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
It would help a lot if you can give me a link to a post where you linked to another site and the pingback didn’t go through. It’s a bit difficult to investigate if I can’t actually see the problem.

Thank you for the post link, @ingwerlatte1
I see 4 links in that post which should have generated a pingback:
1 – https://allesevolution.wordpress.com/2016/04/07/arne-hoffmann-plaedoyer-fuer-eine-linke-maennerpolitik/ is showing a pingback to your post on the site.
2 – https://gaywest.wordpress.com/2014/03/02/manner-jetzt-gehts-los/ does not show the pingback because the owner of that site hasn’t approved it, but it did go through.
3 – https://man-tau.com/2014/03/29/warum-linke-die-mannerrechtler-brauchen-aber-mannerrechtler-die-linken-nicht/ is showing the pingback
4 – https://man-tau.com/2014/04/04/uber-den-sinn-linker-mannerpolitik/ is also showing the pingback
The link, https://geschlechterallerlei.wordpress.com/2016/10/16/fundstuecke-klaus-leszek-und-djadmoros-zu-maennerbeben-von-arne-hoffmann/, to another post on your own site, also shows the pingback on that site.
So from what I can see all the links on that post correctly created pingbacks. The https://schwulemiker.wordpress.com/, https://gleichmass.wordpress.com/, and https://man-tau.com/ won’t create pingbacks, as you are not linking to specific posts on those sites, just to the home page. Pingbacks only work if you link to specific posts or pages that have comments enabled and that allow pingbacks.

Some update on the issue:
– Akismet reported that they fixed the spam issue. Comments now appear elsewhere.
– I switched from the theme Twenty Ten to Twenty Sixteen.
Whether one or both of these steps actually made a difference I cannot say, however:Since about then, pingbacks appear (at least sometimes) if I edit an older article (in the old editor) and just save it again. This has lead to the earlier examples to now have the pingbacks. After seeing singular examples where the pingbacks reappeared, I edited the posts from last October where the pingbacks did not work.
The latest post from yesterday created pingbacks on most of the posts – in some cases, maybe the blog owners still need to approve them.
The latest example where it did not work is now:
https://geschlechterallerlei.wordpress.com/2014/03/24/die-linie-in-der-geschlechterdiskussion-verlauft-nicht-zwischen-gut-und-bose/This should have created a pingback to:
https://allesevolution.wordpress.com/2017/04/10/zweiter-deutscher-gender-kongress-am-13-05-2017-in-nuernberg/I also already tried a manual trackback.

In the post you link here, https://geschlechterallerlei.wordpress.com/2014/03/24/die-linie-in-der-geschlechterdiskussion-verlauft-nicht-zwischen-gut-und-bose/, there is no link to https://allesevolution.wordpress.com/2017/04/10/zweiter-deutscher-gender-kongress-am-13-05-2017-in-nuernberg/
That post only contains links to http://maennerstreik.wordpress.com/2014/03/22/frauenkampftag-still-loving-tyrannosaurus-rex/ and https://man-tau.com/2014/03/21/ein-mann-zieht-in-den-frieden/#comment-2982
On the first post comments are closed, so it won’t created a pingback now, and on the second you linked to a specific comment, not to a post. As I said above, pingbacks are only created if you link to a Post, or a Page. Linking to a comment on a post does not create a pingback.

Sorry, I mixed up the links.
The article in question is:
https://geschlechterallerlei.wordpress.com/2017/04/29/warum-ich-auf-den-2-deutschen-genderkongress-hinweise/The pingback should go to the following article:
-
It appears there was again an error in the link. I fixed that for you, and the pingback is now pending.
-
Thanks again for the effort! It seems like for new posts pingbacks are created again and if I edit older posts from the time pingbacks did not work, they are sent now (when using https, not http).
The only remaining question is: What did the trick?
The steps that I took:
– get unblocked by Akismet (necessary to post here, although seemingly unrelated to the pingback issue itself)
– change the theme (from Twenty Twen to Twenty Sixteen)Did you do anything extra on your side? (Apart from answering all the posts, checking the mentioned entries etc. :) )
Switching the theme was suggested in the German forum. I only wonder why this happened when one of the most popular themes was in use. If the answer is “it’s just so, complicated technical background”, that’s fine for me. Or is the bug theme-unspecific but can be solved easily by switching?
I intend to blog about the solution to spread the word. I think this will put the time spent on solving this to a greater use.

Pingbacks can be temperamental. I basically just removed the link and added it back, but I think http vs https could have been the issue – I didn’t specifically check for that before removing the link.
The theme is not a factor, though, as the theme you use has no effect on the actual content of your site.
-
http vs. https was just the issue in this case – in the other ones, I used https. Thanks for the information that pingbacks can be temperamental. I will quote that!
Maybe it was not the theme itself but just the switch that did the trick. Otherwise, it’s down to “being marked by Akismet as spam” although Akismet claims this does not affect pingbacks.
