pingbacks not working
-
I’ve been a long time wordpress.com user. I’ve noticed in the last few months that pingbacks are not working receiving and sending. Any help? Pingbacks are enabled on both the sending and receiving sites.
e.g. https://islandinthenet.com/user-cpan-installation-broken/
and https://montgomeryhills.wordpress.com/2018/09/19/the-journey-begins/
another example:

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Since your site islandinthenet.com is not hosted by us, you need to check if pingbacks are enabled on each individual post.
If you’re still having trouble with it, I suggest posting in the WordPress.org forums:
-
Hi khurt,
I’ve checked montgomeryhills.wordpress.com and the good news is, pingbacks are working but they’ve gone through to your spam folder:
https://wordpress.com/comments/spam/montgomeryhills.wordpress.com
Each one can be approved from there.
islandinthenet.com is a self hosted WordPress.org site so if you aren’t receiving pingbacks there, I recommend posting to the WordPress.org support forums for advice. As a first step, it would be worth checking those settings in case the option isn’t enabled.
I hope this helps.

Pingbacks are enabled on both the selfhosted and wordpress.com site. There are not pingback comments in spam folder from either of these web site. Pingbanks are enabled for the entire site and for each post.
-
One website is selfhosted and the other is on WordPress.com. So wordpress.com is indeed involved in helping trouble shoot.
-
Yes. Pingbacks are enabled by default to the entire site so that I never have to enable them for individual posts. Yes, all posts referenced have pingbacks enabled.

Hi khurt,
I just created a test pingback on
The Journey Beginsand that is being displayed in the comment area:https://montgomeryhills.wordpress.com/2018/09/19/the-journey-begins/
I’ve left that in place so you can see it at the bottom of the post.
In noticed there are 2 comments on https://islandinthenet.com/user-cpan-installation-broken/ that contain no text. Can you double check whether one of those is actually a ping back here:
https://islandinthenet.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php
In my testing, the pingbacks listed there don’t explicitly say pings on a self hosted site. Instead, they have no email address.
Out of curiosity, have you selected
Discourage search engines from indexing this sitein the Reading settings on islandinthenet.com? This can prevent pingbacks from getting through. -
Hi gemma, thank for testing this. https://montomgeryhills.wordpress.com is receiving ping backs but it seems not from https://islandinthenet.com/ so the problem must be on my selfhosted wordpress.
Those two comments on https://montgomeryhills.wordpress.com/2018/09/19/the-journey-begins/, are Webmentions.
Search engines are allowed to index the site. That’s never been disabled.
NOTE: I tried one more test.
https://islandinthenet.com/test-post/ and https://montgomeryhills.wordpress.com/2018/09/21/test-post/
These seemed to work. So …. I am stumped.
I will contact the developer of the webmentions plugin for assistance. Perhaps the issue lies there.
-
HI there,
If it only doesn’t work from your self-hosted site, then the problem lies there, yes. The Webmention plugin overrides WordPress’s built-in pingback function, so if it’s not working, that plugin is the logical place to start.
You can find the support forum for that plugin here:

Hi, I worked with the developers of the Webmention plugin but it turns out that another plugin, the Microformat 2 plugin, was the issue. I replaced it with the MF2 Feeds plugin and the issue is resolved.
