Pingbacks to My Own Articles Not Working
-
This morning, I published an article at my blog which included links to two other articles I wrote and published in the past. Until today, when I posted articles which included links to earlier articles, those older articles got pingbacks from the new article. Why is that no longer happening?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Same thing is happening on my blog posts, too. Just in the last couple/few days, pingbacks are not working on the newly published blog posts.
I was able to edit the older posts and put a link to the new post and pingbacks worked yesterday, but it’s not working today.
I would prefer not to have to edit all the older posts in order to have a link to the new posts.
-
Hi, this is happening for me too. The links are all there (as in you can click them) and I expect when fixed, I’ll have to go though and approve them in bulk. Is there some sort of issue?
-
I published a new article this morning, which had two links to articles I had published in the past, on that same blog. As happened last week, those pingbacks were not made to those earlier articles.
Comment moderation is turned on on that blog, but for more than ten years, whenever I published an article with links to any of my earlier articles, those pingbacks appeared in the Pending comments section. That has not happened in the last couple of weeks. Please explain what is going on and when you plan to correct this problem.
Sincerely,
Kat

Hi there,
We’ve had several more reports of pingbacks failing, but it’s unclear at this time what is causing it. We’re looking into it, and will update this thread once we have more info.
To help us try to narrow down the cause, can you please let me know whether these posts were scheduled or directly published? And did you use the classic editor or the block editor, and via My Sites or WP-Admin?
And if you can please provide a link to a post where you included a link that should have generated a pingback?
-
I always use the WP-Admin, Classic Editor and directly publish.
The pingbacks didn’t work properly starting April 24, 2019.
Most new posts have 6 to 12 links to previous posts. Some of the pings worked but most did not. So, I went to the older posts and placed a link to the new post and most of those pingbacks did work.
Also, when the pingbacks do work on the new posts, they changed how they look in the Comments page, abbreviating the title and including the new post’s abbreviated title. For example:
[…] The Openly Plutocrat… on Step Right Up – to the Amazing… […]
So, I have had to edit each pingback to only show the title of the post being pinged.
Note that this does not happen when I go to the older post and edit it to ping the new post. Those pingbacks show the complete title of the new post on the Comment page.
Here is a link to one of the recent posts where the pingbacks did not work for all the links to previous posts:
Three did work, the rest did not.

My posts are almost always scheduled in advance. I very seldom publish a post in real time. I also use the WP Admin and the classic editor for my posts.
My most recent post, which went live this past Friday (3 May 2019), has a link to one of my previous articles. The post from Friday can be found here: https://regencyredingote.wordpress.com/2019/05/03/jib-doors-through-the-regency/. The link “paper hangings” is to one of my articles from 2009.
Thank you for looking into this. If there is any other information which you need, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Kathryn

Thanks everyone. We have filed a report and are still collecting examples to help track down the cause. It is unknown at this time, but please know we are working on it.

Thanks jonawbrey. Our development team has access to this thread and will be able to review all reports filed here. Appreciate everyones feedback.

Hi folks, I think our devs were able to spot and fix the problem that was causing some pingbacks to fail. If anyone still needs help, let us know!
-
Thanks, Supernovia! All the pings worked for today’s new post. Now, I’ll go edit the last two weeks or so posts and see if the pingbacks work.
-
I post every Friday morning, and my new post this morning had a link to one of my older articles. Yet again, there was no pingback to that older article. Therefore, so far as I can see, pingbacks are still not working.
Sorry,
Kat

dandelionsalad – Thanks for confirming :) Please let us know your findings on the older posts.

Hi Liz. My post from two days ago had several links to older posts, 3 of these links did not receive a pingback while the rest did work. Some of these pingbacks worked when I edited the post yesterday, and some worked today when I edited the post but not all worked.

Links to previous posts that should receive a pingback but didn’t:

@regencyredingote and @dandelionsalad, this wouldn’t have fixed old pingbacks, unfortunately, just new ones going forward.
Can you confirm whether new posts with pingbacks work?
-
Yes, today and yesterday’s posts’ pingbacks all worked properly.
I went back and edited all the posts from when the pingbacks stopped working and almost all worked except that one post with 3 links that didn’t work.
It doesn’t make sense that the pings only work for new posts. Could you explain that?
Thanks again.
-
I just updated by last three posts, all of which had pingbacks to older articles. All of those pingbacks have now shown up.
Thanks,
Kat
-
Yeah, the 3 missing pingbacks finally showed up when I edited the post again today.
Thanks for fixing this!
