Pinterest Rich Pin Validator

I have validated my website with Pinterest. They have a Rich Pin validator that I’m now trying to add. This will help anything pinned from my blog be identified as an article with the title and author. I didn’t see any topics about this in the forum.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Rich Pins aren’t officially supported by WordPress.COM.

The only code that will work for Pinterest site verification of a wordpress.com blog is described here https://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/#pinterest-site-verification and you must be logged into Pinterest when you are trying to verify?

The Pinterest “Pin It” hover button will automatically appear on your WordPress.com blog if you have added Pinterest as a sharing button on your Settings > Sharing page and if you are also using the “Official buttons” for the style of the buttons (you can change it on that same settings page).

We can hover over any image in a post and pin it if we are logged into Pinterest. If you have enabled the official buttons for sharing, a “Pin It” hover button will automatically appear for your images. https://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/ All we do after clicking the share button is choose one of the images displayed in the post to pin. It’s as easy as pie. ;)

See how to install the Pinterest browser button:
    Google Chrome
    Mozilla Firefox
    Internet Explorer
    Safari
    Microsoft Edge

Also, note that you can embed from Pinterest https://en.support.wordpress.com/embed-from-pinterest/
And here’s the Sharing link https://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/

This mission required intense research, but I finally pulled it off. Rich pins are now in effect (writesquire at Pinterest)! Until I can create a detailed how-to post with screenshots, here are the basics as I know some of you are anxious to implement this feature.

Before you start, suggestion: be sure one of your website articles/asides is pinned at Pinterest. Take a screenshot of it, since you’ll want to compare it after the rich pins go live. Also, don’t be nervous. This IS doable, once you pinpoint what’s where as needed to accomplish this goal.

    ----
First, KNOW that WordPress.com is ALREADY setup to handle EVERYTHING needed for enjoying Pinterest Rich Pins. We just need to plug in certain data in precise locations. We also need to know that WP uses the Open Graph format, which Pinterest places in the HTML TAGS category, as noted below (5th step).

Everything below should/must be done from a desktop/laptop browser. Trust me- tried with an iPad Pro (BigBoy) but weirdness finally pushed me to my iMac.

    ----
Second, open two browser tabs. In one tab, go to your WP Admin area. Dashboard → Traffic → scroll down for “Site Verification Services.” You’ll see a field for Pinterest. Just be aware of it & leave it for now. In the 2d tab, go to your Pinterest Account Settings, at the site itself. Be sure your website is listed. You need to Confirm, so click the confirm button. The resulting page provides the meta tag required to verify your control of your website. Copy the full meta tag and paste it into the Pinterest field in your WordPress.com 1st open tab. Save it. If you see a check mark followed by Confirmed, you’ve already performed this step.

    ----
Third, I’m not positive this is an absolute requirement, but saw this step mentioned frequently, so I did so → Switch your Pinterest account to Business ($0). Go to business.pinterest.com & click the red “convert your existing account” button. Then fill out the business-related info (FYI- I kept the (prepopulated) info provided for my personal account.) Accept the Terms of Service by checking the checkbox, which causes the Convert Button to turn red and clickable. Tap it. Done with this part.

    ----
Fourth, find any article/aside you’ve previously posted at WordPress.com. Open it so you can get to the full URL. Copy the Full URL to your selected article/aside, including the http/https part.

    ----
Fifth, open another tab & and google: “Pinterest rich pin validator” (with the quotes). First search results hit = “Rich Pin Validator – Pinterest Developers”. Click. On that Validator page, paste the URL you just copied (to one of your standard/article pages/posts). Note #3 in the Pinterest listing– you’ll be choosing HTML TAGS b/c WP uses Open Graph (iPad’s View Source app empowered me to pull that tidbit.) Memory: click save or whatever button to get this party started.

Regrettably, I did not keep notes as I indulged this chore, so I’m relying on memory throughout most of this. After you enter your URL and tap the blue Validate button, a pop up or page appears. I remember that the HTML TAGS button was preselected, which is precisely what we want. There may be other info requested in that pop up. If so, it’s easy to fill out (gotta be since I recall no specifics). The screen will say something about needing to check your site, but my rich pins went live well within the hour. I did this around 4a.m. Eastern this morning (Sunday), which may explain the super speedy system response.

Wait an hour. To confirm your Rich Pins are indeed live, look at the screenshot you took at the beginning of this note. Go back and recheck that pin. You may need to refresh the page. Visually comparing the “before” screenshot to “now” should confirm: you now see the extra info provided via the rich pin feature, such as the title of the post.

    ----
WrapUp: I have zero computer training & know nothing beyond what I’ve provided above. But I repeat: WordPress.com has ALL mechanisms in place to accomplish this goal. Why they don’t provide a dedicated how-to page is beyond me. Hopefully, this cheatsheet via my stumbles and bumbles will lead you to the Promised Land.

(Rats! No mechanism to preview this note so pinkies crossed.)
