placement of thumbnail photos next to each other – caption gets in way
-
1) I can’t get photos next to each other (I don’t want a gallery which would include ALL the photos of that post — I want them divided up) — the cursor stays at the end of the caption within the last photo’s “box”. How to get cursor out of that caption box so that I may place the next photo next to it in a row.
2) the title of the last video “Rendezvous” is not appearing in the posting. What am I doing wrong: it is in the “title” box and “saved”, but still does not appear.

1. You should be able to click anywhere else in the editor to exit the caption area.
2. The title is actually part of the sharing interface, so if you disable the sharing functions, the title won’t appear.

No this is not helpful. Yes, I SHOULD be able to put my cursor outside the box, but I can only do this within the text area. The photos I want to insert are at the end of the text area. I hit “return” and then I insert one photo: “thumbnail” “left align” — works perfectly. Then the next photo — well, the cursor remains at the end of the caption or I can move it up to the edge of the photo, but I cannot get it OUTSIDE that caption area so as to post the next photo right next to this one.
By the way, I’ve been able to do this in the past, but I’m just not able to do it at the present time and I don’t know why.
An alternative would be to insert a three-photo gallery. However, ALL photos which I’ve uploaded for the post then appear in the gallery, whether I have numbered them or not. But if I could disable some of the photos from the gallery — the photos that I’ve inserted higher up in the text — this would work, but I don’t think this is possible. Any suggestions?

That’s rather odd. Try hitting the escape key on your keyboard. That should bring your cursor out of the edit box entirely.
If that doesn’t work, can you tell us which browser (and version of) you’re using?

Hi Macmanx —
Thanks for trying to help. I tried the escape key — that does not work either. I can place the cursor right at the end of the text, but I cannot go to either side of the first photo I uploaded. My browser is Safari — it must be the newest version since I just got a brand new Mac 10.6.8 with Safari already on it.
-
Hm, that’s rather odd. I’m having trouble re-producing this via my copy of Safari, but it could be because I’m running 5.1 under OS X 10.7.
Just to be sure that this is limited to Safari, would you please try from Chrome?

Hi —
I downloaded Chrome and used that to work with the blog. Nothing has changed — I can do no more than I could in Safari.
Maybe there is something I am doing wrong. It’s just that I can’t get three of my photos to appear in a row, whereas I used to be able to. A few days ago I did an “upgrade” of everything. When this was finished none of the videos appeared on my browser. My son finally discovered that the flash application needed to be updated, and by updating it, the videos now could be seen again. I’m wondering if there is something else that might need to be upgraded?

Hm, that is rather odd. Is the post that you’re working on saved as a Draft? If so, what’s the title? I’d love to take a shot at it myself.
If you haven’t saved it as a Draft, please do so, so I can tinker around with it.

Since I wanted to go ahead and post, I changed the design. Originally I wanted two larger photos inserted into the post at two different spots, and then three small ones at the bottom of the post — thumbnails all in a row. Since this didn’t work, I ended up eliminating one of the photos and inserting the remaining four in a “gallery”. I’ll reconstruct what I did. The draft will be called “A Pair”. It will take me a few moments.

I have redone the draft in my draft folder: I made two of the photos large, the way I wanted them. Then I started the row of thumbnails at the bottom. But I can’t get my cursor out of that text box to do so. That draft is called “A Pair”. The one I posted is called “Pairs”.

Hi Macmanx —
The other issue I have is that on my most recent video posting, called Rendezvous, I cannot get the title of the video to appear in the posted video. I’ve been able to do this in the past, but it is not working this time. Could you also help me with this issue? Thanks!!
-
This is rather odd. I have tried in Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. I’m able to click into the caption area, edit or add to the caption, and click out of the area without much trouble.
I am running OS X 10.7, but that shouldn’t make much different.
Here’s something to try, click inside the caption of “Belle,” like between the e and l. Add a letter, then click anywhere in the paragraph to the right.
Also, if you find that you like the gallery feature, you can exclude specific images by altering the gallery shortcode via the HTML editor tab: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#gallery-shortcode
As for the video, the title is now part of the share bar, so if you disable sharing on the video, the title won’t appear either.
-
1) I tried the following to exclude photos from the gallery:
[gallery exclude=”2011IMG_570307,2011IMG_574107″]
it did not exclude them — maybe I have the code wrong? It did create a gallery with all the photos. Could you maybe spell out the code correctly for me?2) I can get my cursor from the text box around the photo back into the text area. But that is not where I want it. I it to appear right next to and outside that text box because that is where I want the next photo to go. Clicking between the e and the l of Belle too my cursor to the end of my text — not to right next to the photo’s text box.
3) I don’t want these videos to be downloaded — shared. Is there no way of getting around the connection between “shared” and “title”?
-
1. You need to include just the ID number of the image. Instructions for that are included in the “Note” section below the table at http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#gallery-shortcode
2. Ok, I see what you’re doing now. This is a limitation of the third-party tool that we use for the Visual editor. Basically, it tries to guess at what you’re doing, and it’s usually right, but not this time. When I run into issues like this, I briefly head over to the HTML tab and enter some text next to the image’s code. When you return to the Visual tab, you’ll have a good reference point that you can actually click on.
3. Not at this time, but we are looking into it.

Out of curiosity, I did try #2 above. Yes, that works up to a point. The last image is not aligned — it is lower on the page. Any explanation or way to correct it? As I said, I can use the “exclude from the gallery” to make the posting work the way I want to, but I’m just wondering why that last image doesn’t align?
-
Image alignments are all relative to text, or rather the word it’s inserted next time. It’s a bit of a tricky “game” (for lack of a better word), but sometimes you have to play around to find the best placement.
-
Oh No!! Did you correct the Rendezvous? The title was there this morning (!!), but I decided to take out the hyphen so that it would be the same as the title of the posting. Now it is no longer there. What did I do? I’ll try going back to a previous “saved”, but if you get a chance, could you take out the hyphen???
-
Nope, I can’t go back to a previous auto-save. The title will have to be re-inserted. If you get a chance, could you do that again? Thank you, and I’m so sorry I messed it up. No hyphen so that it is the same as the title. Thank you!!!
