placing a blog post in a category

I am just starting out and struggling to get blog posts to fall under the different menu options. I can see my posts in the ‘recent posts’ area of the page but if I click on ‘recipes’ for example, the recipe shows up as a full article and not just a link.
How do I fix this? I am assuming there is some sort of code? Perhaps I am using the wrong web page style. I do not want to continue making posts if I cannot get my posts to load in the categories they are supposed to be in.
