Plagiarism/theft of my material

  • Unknown's avatar

I have several WP notifications that bloggers have “copied” my post and put it on their site. Unfortunately, they have not attributed it to me or provided a link to my site.

I’m not clear what to do about this. One site has no contact info and another had comments enabled, but my comments are not published.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Are these notifications “reblogs”? If so, that is a feature of WordPress.com and allows other bloggers to post a link and excerpt on their sites, which ideally then drives more traffic back to you. Think of it as free advertising. :)

    Use the Reblog Button

If the blogs have actually copied all of your post and reposted it as theirs, that is something entirely different.

If these are not reblogged posts, could you please provide links to your posts and the locations where others have copied your content?

These are not WP bloggers re blogging.
I received a WP notification in my comments and when I followed the links I found these sites:
    http://3guiltypleasures.com/what-keeps-happy-couples-happy/#comment-94

    http://www.hashcrush.com/thesurprising-truth-makes-happy-couples-happy/

There was another that had my post all chopped up with some weird political nonsense but it was mostly unreadable so I don’t care.

A third didn’t give me a byline but kept a twitter link.

This particular post was also featured on the HuffPost and got a lot of attention but these sites seem to have come to my WP site and copied from here.

Would it help to see my WP notifications?

    Thx.

It looks like both of the sites you just linked have links to your site within the posts. If you have pingbacks enabled, you may be notified when your site is linked elsewhere.

However, if either of those sites have actually copied all of your content, there’s not much we can do at WordPress.com since neither is hosted with us. You may wish to look them up in a WHOIS search (http://who.is/) and contact their hosting providers to file a Digital Millennium Copyright Act notice against them.

    Yes, straight copy.

I’ll have to go look for the links back to my site- didn’t notice.

This has happened before but there’s usually a byline and some sort of link so I don’t care. This is obnoxious. I’ll do what you suggested.

The internet is the Wild West with no sheriff.

    Thx?

You’ve hit the nail on the head… it is the wild west. If you post something on the internet, you pretty much have to reconcile yourself that it can (and if it’s any good, will) get used by someone else. You can post copyright notices on your site and on each post, but unless you’re prepared to pursue legal claims against someone, it unfortunately means very little.

Now I get it- the links in my post create the pingback notification. These were my original links.

I’ll be sure to have at least one link in future posts that go out on big blogs like Huff since this happens more when posts are more visible.

    Thx.

If a post links to you and gets picked up on Huff Post, that can only be a good thing for you. :)
