could the $42 be because I have a domain..
so the “20% discount” is really a $39/plan

I don’t see anything in your screenshot saying 20% discount. Is that USD? They seem to be doing a lot of messing about with plans and prices in various countries at the moment. $48 is the price I see displayed on the Interweb so $39 is a good deal but this thread has been tagged to ask if a member of staff could reply to you.

I got an email. for 20% off and when I click on the link it get that pricing. Well I ate until the close of day to think about it
I assume IF I get a paid plan thru wp, a public forum will not be the only option for support

If I have my own domain it wouldn’t be a problem, right? I haven’t really set up the site yet.
I tried one of the other web hosting and ended up cancelling but they couldn’t/wouldn’t refund for the domain.

We have two options for using a domain you already own here:
Mapping allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/
A transfer would allow to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/
why does it say jetpack?
Jetpack is sort of a name for our own built-in features that go beyond what the core WordPress software offers. :)

And it takes me to Jetpack checkthis time I clicked on wordpress.xxx.com site
and THIS time it takes me to wordpress checkoutQuestion : are they the same thing, but the difference is that one (jetpack) is because I already have a domain?

Earlier when I wrote and what I’ve been clicking on is the site I want to use with the paid plan. myblogname.com (using the domain I have)
and when I click to pay it takes me to the ‘jetpack paymentThis time I selected wordpress.myblogname.com and it takes me to the wordpress payment
My question is, is the difference because one used wp free domain and the other I used a paid domain/

Those are two different sites. If you click on My Sites ->Switch Site, you’ll see them listed there separately.
https://sussexmusings.wordpress.com/ is your WordPress.com site.
sussexmusings.com is a self-hosted WordPress site, hosted at Hostgator.com, and connected to your account through the Jetpack plugin. So what you’ve been doing is try to buy a plan for the Jetpack site instead of the WordPress.com site.
If you want to upgrade your WordPress.com site, you need to first select sussexmusings.wordpress.com in the site switcher, before you go to the Plans page.
If the Hostgator site at sussexmusings.com is no longer online, and you want to use that domain with your WordPress.com site instead, we can also disconnect the Jetpack connection on your account for you. Please confirm if we should do that.

Now I have a headache
0. picked HostGator, frustrated w/setup/support so I cancelled BUT I couldn’t cancel domain
1. Got a discount code good for yesterday (6/24 only)
2. clicked on link and because I ‘owned” a domain and wanted to use it, I clicked on sussexmusings.com, and that’s where the confusion started w/the price and jetpack checkout
3. Didn’t complete checkout, clicked on discount link again and this time choose sussexmusings.wordpress.com and that’s when I got the wordpress checkout4. with time running out on use code and no idea what the difference is, I closed the tab and clicked on link again and this time chose my THIRD option Sussex4ever.wordpress.com
So that’s where I am this morning. I completed transaction BUT I haven’t DONE anything else.
So now I have sussex4ever.com (thru wordpress didn’t click on link to CLAIM yet)I also have sussexmusings.com (hostgator)
ALL I wanted was to create a site using sussexmusings.com
SO what are my options and if a chat is part of the paid plan how do I start a chat
