plan and hosting question
-
I own a domain name. I know my WordPress account can be hosted through another hosting site OR wordpress itself. My question is, if I choose to host with say Bluehost or Hostgator and I then install wp to that host will my current wp plan determine my options for what I will or will not be able to do on that new hosting site? For example, I want to eventually monetize my site, so I am thinking of upgrading my wp plan to premium to start. Is it accurate to say my site will not be able to be monetized (no matter the host) unless I do in fact upgrade my wp plan? I just want to make sure I am understanding this clearly before I decide what I would like to do.

Hi boldlybeingmom,
I know my WordPress account can be hosted through another hosting site OR wordpress itself.
That’s right — you can use WordPress.com or install WordPress.org software with another host (like Bluehost) and create a brand new site:
if I choose to host with say Bluehost or Hostgator and I then install wp to that host will my current wp plan determine my options for what I will or will not be able to do on that new hosting site?
Our plans and their features are only compatible with sites hosted on WordPress.com. If you decided to use WordPress.org software with another host, they would determine how much storage space is available on their servers etc.
I want to eventually monetize my site, so I am thinking of upgrading my wp plan to premium to start.
Upgrading boldlybeingmom.wordpress.com to the Premium plan would give you automatic access to the WordAds program:
That page lists other monetisation options which don’t require a paid plan :)
Overall, I think the first step is to decide whether you want to use WordPress.com or WordPress.org software as that will determine which options are available going forward.
