plan is supposed to be free the first year

  All the plans listed show the first year is FREE. WHY do I have to pay now?

  Hi there, every WordPress.com upgrade plan includes registering a custom domain which is included at no extra charge for the first year of your plan. Plans, however, are paid for at check out. https://wordpress.com/support/plan-features/

  From the second year, you’ll pay for the renewal of your plan and the renewal of your custom domain separately.
