Plan upgrade/my current site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi-
I’m going to upgrade my plan so I have an ‘true’ domain name. I already have that website but am going to have it as the blog. What do I need to do to the current website? Take it down, save my page/content? Will the wordpress blog just overwrite it? I wrote all the content via Weebly.
Thanks for any help you can provide!!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Are you speaking of your site at http://melsmosaic.wordpress.com/, or a site at Weebly? For the WordPress.com site you don’t need to do anything extra. The custom domain will simply be added to that site and when someone loads it they will see the custom domain in their browsers instead of the free address. But the free address will also still work, and if you ever let the domain expire your site just goes back to using the free address.

If you want a domain for a Weebly site you need to contact their support to ask about the best way to do that.

Thanks for the reply. I am sort of talking about both.

-For WordPress, great that it’s just added. I want it to be melsmosaic.com vs. melsmosaic.wordpress.com

-For Weebly, where I built my website (melsmosaic.com), will that not interfere with the new site via wordpress? I own the domain already (via ICD), then built the site via/on Weebly. I just want to be sure nothing ultimately interferes with the other, or how do I get them to merge properly. I’m going to get rid of the current content on melsmosaic.com and put it on, in some fashion, my blog (which is currently melsmosaic.wordpress.com).

I know I’m writing a lot, and really appreciate all your help.

  • If you already own the domain you will need to use the domain mapping upgrade to connect it to your site here. In order for the mapping to work you will need to change the name servers for the domain from Weebly’s to ours. The moment you do that the domain will stop showing the content on the Weebly site and start showing the content on the WordPress.com site instead. There is no inbetween.

You can read about how domain mapping works here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

I don’t know how Weebly works, but if they give free URLs like we do, your Weebly site will most likely go back to the free URL once you remove the domain there, but their support will be able to better advise you about this.

Thanks for your help! One last bit, if you don’t mind (it’s because I’m so nervous). If this isn’t something you can help with, my sincere apologies!! Please just let me know. My site is built on weebly, the domain was purchased on ICD. So, I can stop my page on Weebly and then just have the domain name. ICD told me the below. After I take these steps, is this where I (simply) enter my domain of melsmosaic.com as what I want my blog to be called as it mentions in that domain mapping link you provided?
    Thanks.

The DNS service currently used by your domain name is part of the hosting package and will expire with the hosting account. You will need to log into the domain management panel at (https://domains.suresupport.com/?domain=melsmosaic.com), click the “DNS Settings” tab, then select “Registrar Nameservers” and click “Save”.

Afterwards, please click the “Host Records” tab. There you will need to recreate the DNS A record you currently have at the “DNS Manager” of the hosting Control Panel (https://cp.hoster911.com) pointing your domain to Weebly.

  • I’m not entirely clear on those instructions from ICD. It looks like they’re telling you to still point your domain at Weebly, which is not what you want to do.

If possible, you should set your domain’s name servers to WordPress.com’s, as is explained here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Make it clear to ICD that you want to use your domain with a site hosted on WordPress.com, not on Weebly, and give them those name servers.

If they tell you they need an IP address instead, let me know and I can provide that as well.
