Plane Theme header

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi.

I´m trying to make a custom header for my blog.
I made it to the recommended 1000 x 200 px, but when I upload it, it makes me crop it anyway, and if I don´t crop it, it still gets cropped.

It also looks totally blurry. I have tried 5 times now with different resolutions but it still looks terrible.

    What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Your header image is 1000 X 220 pixels now. What was the size of the original image?

    Hi, thank you for answering!

I´m not sure I understand what you mean by original image.
I made the header exactly 1000 x 200 ppi in Photoshop.

It´s not blurry like it looks now, and it has a much larger yellow frame around it. When I upload it as a header here it either crops it lengthwise, or if I choose the option not to crop it, it gets enlarged and stretched out and completely blurry.

I have tried remaking it with the resolutions 72, 100, 150, and 300, saved as jpeg quality 10, and I get the same result each time I upload it.

    I can´t figure out what´s wrong.

If it´s 1000 x 220 now, then 20 pixels must have been added when it got stretched out after uploading it here.

Hi. I just used a relatively high quality photograph to create a header image on a test website with the Plane theme activated. The image I used was more than larger enough, but not excessively large: 1500 X 407. After uploading and cropping with the custom header tool there was a sharp decline in quality. Sharp, bright-colored images became blurry and dull. If I were you I would switch to another theme in a heartbeat.

If it´s 1000 x 220 now, then 20 pixels must have been added when it got stretched out after uploading it here.

That’s right. Where did you read or hear that it should be 1000 X 200? Here’s your cropped header image btw: https://lundabilder.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/cropped-header-test3.jpg. You may download it to see the dimensions in your hard drive files, or (with FireFox) view the dimensions at Tools > Page Info > Media.

    Hi again! Thank you!

I read that it should be 1000×200 in the customization place.
It comes up as the recommended size.

Maybe I should switch to another theme..

I do like that its clean, and my pics show up large and relatively sharp even though they are really low resolution and saved for web.

Too bad the header isn´t as good with images.

    Weird.

Thank you for your help anyway! :)

It actually says 220, at Customize Plane > Header, but perhaps it was corrected recently.
    You’re welcome.

The 20 pixel difference is a relatively insignificant factor in this case.

I have exactly the same issue with the Plane theme, which is really frustrating. Have you managed to find an alternative theme that’s as clean and works for you ?

Hi, yes, I switched to the Hemingway Revisited theme.
It´s better as far as the header goes at least. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oops, I men Hemingway Rewritten.

Thanks – with some intrepidation I switched, and it’s looking far better (to be tweaked later). Makes Plane look a little, well, plain :-)

    Thanks for your help,

ok…so I’m not thinking of upgrading to something more swish…any recommendations ?

  • Unknown's avatar

Do you mean “now” not “not”? otherwise I don´t understand. :)

I would suggest going to your Admin page, and then go to “Appearance” then “Themes” and then just keep clicking “preview” on the different themes to see which ones look good with your content.

I don´t think your header will show up, since they are all different, but you will be able to see your other things in different layouts.

Do don´t have to commit to anything unless you decide to. When you have checked everything out, you will just go back to the one you have unless to make a choice of another one and save it. :)

Sorry – that was a “now”, not a “not” :-)

I was slightly concerned that preview might mess things up if I then reverted back. Is preview completely safe in that respect ?

    Apologies…I’m a complete notice !

    A complete novice, that is…

    (I’m gonna get more sleep…) :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Lol!

I have previewed probably every one of them, and it has never messed up the main one so far.

You don´t have to revert back to anything as long as you don´t “use and save” the one you are previewing, ( that would mess some things up when you revert back maybe) you just have to close the preview and try another one. :)

Thanks for all your help, apologies for the “newbie” questions.

I ended up purchasing the “Chronicle” theme which seems to work rather well for my purposes, and offers a little more flexibility over the free themes.

Thanks again for all your help !

  • Thanks for reporting the issue with the custom header in Plane – it seems like a probable theme bug so I’m going to report it to our developers. Even though you’ve all switched to different themes, I’d like to get this working properly for other users. :)
