  • Hi there,

Changing the domain name of your site will definitely affect your search ranking as the search engine will need to recrawl your site. So in order to maintain the rank, it’ll be best not to change your domain name.

Does Changing Domain Name Affect SEO?

If you intend to change only the site name but maintain the same domain name, the impact might not be so significant thought there might be some fluctuate. But I’m adding a modlook tag for staff advice.

If you have purchased a pain plan on WordPress.com, you’re entitled to receive direct support from the staff via live chat and private email.

  • Sorry for the typo, it should be paid plan.

Thank you for your reply Regina. Currently my blog name is a long name which is not very easy to follow. Thats why i wanted to change that name to a short one. But there is an option for redirecting the link. Will it work efficiently, after changing the domain name. How long will it take to get the normal reach once i change my domain?

  • You’re welcome.

Currently my blog name is a long name which is not very easy to follow.

When you mentioned blog name, do you mean domain name (e.g. http://www.example.com) or the name of your site (e.g. My Blog on My Journey to Europe Countries)?

But there is an option for redirecting the link. Will it work efficiently, after changing the domain name.

To use the redirection method, you need to setup redirect for ALL the links on your old site to the new site. You can take a look at this page that I found.

How long will it take to get the normal reach once i change my domain?

If we’re talking about a totally new domain name without redirection method, it could take a few weeks since the search engine needs to recrawl the site again. Even though you can speed up the process by submitting your site to Google Search Console, your ranking will definitely hurt a bit before it goes back up.

Anyway, I’m not a SEO expert so please forgive me as I’m not able to provide you a better answer. I’ve added a modlook tag for staff attention so let us wait for their input on this.

Please do expect some delay in response from the staff members as they’re traveling for the company meetup. Thank you for your patience.

// My current blog name is

    http://www.swararagasangeetham.wordpress.com

and i wanted to change to

    http://www.srsmusique.com

    //

  • I see. So you’re trying to upgrade your free WordPress.com site (swararagasangeetham.wordpress.com) to use a custom domain (www.srsmusique.com), am I right?

If not mistaken, once you’ve upgraded your site to use a paid plan with the custom domain, WordPress.com will automatically create a redirection from your free WordPress.com site to your custom domain. In that case, I think your SEO ranking will not have a major impact.

Anyhow, we should probably wait for staff input on this. :)

  • Hi aji4u4ever,

If you register a custom domain name we’ll automatically redirect all traffic from your .wordpress.com domain to it. This will have an impact on your search engines rankings, but they’ll eventually (usually after a few weeks) realize the change and will reindex your site and your rakings will be back to normal.

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.
