Planning to Upgrade Domain

  I’m considering to purchase the domain mapping ;
  from http://annie8886.wordpress.com
  to http://annie-thejourney.com

  I checked the details it says that
  domain name $10; domain mapping $10..if taken both will only cost $15..

  My main objective, is just to have a smooth readers moving from old blog to my new (self-hosted) site..

  for those who already done this..

  do i really need to take the $15?
  any advice you can give me on doing this process so i would not encounter (as much as possible) technical problems..

  any input will be highly appreciated..

  If you are going to self-host, the domain mapping will do you no good as what it is meant to do is map your new domain name to your present blog on .com. When you make the move to self-hosting, you will take a hit in Google and Technorati. What I did was to make the move, and then to delete all my posts on my .com blog and put up a post telling everyone I had moved and giving them a link to my new blog.

  Typically it can take six months to regain page rank with the search engines and for your Technorati rating to come back up, but for me, it only took about two months although the time it takes may have something to do with how many hits you are averaging per day and such.
