PLANS + DOMAINS
-
I just purchased a domain through your site ($20 compared to $6 if I bought through name cheap), assuming the extra money was because it included hosting, etc. Now it’s telling me that my domain is just going to redirect to the .wordpress.com unless I pay $50 more? This is BS could I please at least have like a one month trial of the WordPress personal before spending $50 more? Thank you, sorry for the frustration, I was excited about this blog but am now unsure if I want to commit to $70 a year, especially with the shady business practices.

Hi @n7cb8sjkc7, we aren’t known for cheap domain registrations so much as our managed hosting, which really is a great value. We take care of security, maintenance, support, spam filtering, and more for you, in addition to providing fast, highly reliable SSL hosting. And it’s super fast, too. We’ve got data centers around the globe.
If you’re looking for the best deal here, I’d recommend getting an annual plan, which comes with a (free) domain credit for the first year. Since you already bought the domain, please just update us here when you’ve got the plan, and we can fix the credit. If you need to transfer the domain registration to a cheaper registrar for renewal the next year, that’s fine, too. You can still have it connected to your site with us.
Alternatively, you could also run your own free copy of WordPress, and handle buying hosting and other services as needed. The nice thing about WordPress is you can choose whether to run your own copy or have someone take care of it for you, and you can even migrate your site to or from our services depending on your needs. If you run your own copy of WordPress, there are technical guides available. Just be sure to pick a reliable host, and make sure you keep regular backups. We have more info on the differences between the free code and our services here.
Anyway, I hope that helps clarify what we’re offering. If you need help choosing a plan, let us know.
Also, as a heads up, if you decide you want to register your domain elsewhere, you can cancel it within the first 96 hours. It’ll be parked for a bit, then released after a few days. After that, domains get more complicated. You’ll want to update us here and let us know what you’d like to do, and we can help you find your next steps.
