Playing a video as soon as a post page loads
-
Hi,
I am customizing the Chronicle theme and my client would like to have the featured images on the front page be videos.1. When I go to the image library, however, the .mov files I have uploaded do not show up. Is there a way to set a video as a featured image?
2. Since I could not find a way to do that, I tried the next best thing – inserting a video into the post itself. That works fine. But! I would like to get the vid to begin playing upon page load rather than waiting for the user to trigger it by clicking. Is that possible? It would be great for the video to begin playing as soon as the page opens.
Thank you very much.

Hi there,

The theme you’re using doesn’t support videos in the featured image area.
If it’s important for you to have a theme that offers that support, then you can filter for themes in our repository that showcase videos here:
https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/video
Swell is an example of a popular theme that supports an autoplaying video in the header area of its home page. As you’re on the Business plan, you won’t be charged any extra for switching to a Premium theme.

You can set your video to autoplay by setting a shortcode parameter: autoplay=true. For example:
[wpvideo xyz autoplay=true]Hope that helps! If you have any extra questions, please feel free to reply here or contact us private via our contact form.

Hi,
I would like to do this, too. The blog I need help with is barewithme.co on Revelar. Only, I am not a web designer, so I have no idea how to set a shortcode parameter or where to even begin doing that.Is this something you can help me with?
Also, when a video does autoplay how does that affect video views/site visits? Does it count as a view once a visitor clicks on the post link or once the video auto plays?
Thanks for your help!

Hi @barewithme327,

The shortcode will automatically be generated after you upload a video directly via the editor.
You will find two tabs in the upper right hand corner of your editor: Visual and HTML. Switch to the HTML tab in order to view the video’s shortcode (a preview of the video rather than the shortcode is displayed under the Visual tab).
Also, when a video does autoplay how does that affect video views/site visits? Does it count as a view once a visitor clicks on the post link or once the video auto plays?
The video auto playing will count as one “play” and will display in the Videos module on your site’s Stats page. The page’s views will be recorded separately under the Post & Pages module.
If you have any further questions, please can you start a new thread on this forum? You can do that here:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/themes#postform
It’s easier for us to keep track of different questions if they’re kept to separate threads and also prevents the original poster from receiving unnecessary email notifications.
It’s also worth noting that, as you have WordPress.com Premium, you’re able to access live chat support via the contact form.
Thanks!
