Please bring back Topics page
-
The topic pages were one of the things that set WordPress.com apart from Blogger. The topic pages were sleek, aesthetically pleasing, and sophisticated looking. Something Blogger lacks in my opinion.
Beyond that, they promoted community. I loved hopping on my favorite topic pages and being able to check out latest posts at a glance. When I posted, I could pull up the topic and check out my “neighbors” around me and discover new blogs.
The new reader format has been a hinderance.
I understand that a post in another thread said there were changes afoot and that the reader set up was temporary. But if that is the case, why is there an announcement on the topics page that seems to indicate otherwise? Are there any more updates on these changes?
I’m very eager to see the topic pages return.

The new style Topics page is a step in the wrong direction! Please add me to the growing list of bloggers who preferred the old style and would like to see it back!
-
I’ll sign that petition. The change of interface is poor for those of us seeking new blogs and to be discovered by others. A move in the wrong direction for your users!
-
I found lots of good blogs by using the topics pages with many different thumbnails displayed. I don’t see myself using the new scrolling messiness at all. I hope it will revert to its previous user-friendly format.
(By the way, those who keep posting links to the discussion with “macmanx,” his final comment was “I don’t have any details on if/when it will come back.” That is certainly far less than definitive – and leaves the clear possibility that the original format will not return.)
-
please please i hope this change is indeed temporary because to me it is not an improvement
-
That last comment about not knowing “if/when” it’ll come back is worrisome. I for one haven’t visited the topics page since the change; since I used to basically haunt the fiction topic page, it’s safe to say I’ve probably missed out on thirty or forty blogs I could have commented on and followed. Truly disappointed the staff hasn’t at least given us more information on this. I specifically joined WP and left my old blogging site because of shenanigans like this where poor changes were made without warning or information. I wonder if traffic to the site has gone down at all because of this? I know I’ve been on a LOT less since it happened.

IE 9 won’t load with Reader. It just asks if i want to recover webpage and then freezes even when i click on ‘yes’, and in Chrome it takes about 20 years for the circle to stop spinning (yes i really have aged 20 years since the start of this rubbish). I’ve noticed a 99% drop in ‘likes’ too, but that’s no surprise. It’s all just **** in the wind lately on WP.

Hello all,
It seems as though I am the only one staff answered for some reason in this
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/what-happened-to-the-topics-pages?replies=2
timethief keeps posting that thread but the nice staff guy said he has no idea when or IF it will be back and I’m heart broken….
-
Timethief – The post you refer to indicates that they are making a change and there is no time frame listed. I have read the post that you indicate. What I would like to know is why my posts are not appearing. And the link in the post that is referred to still shows the reader page. It does not go back to what it used to be as the Happiness Engineer indicates. What is jumping that the gal mentions? Going to another blog hosting site? My perspective – this was working just fine before what changes that are being made are still being made. What caused the change?

I don’t see why people shouldn’t discuss and criticise the regressive changes that have been introduced on these forums.
I was about to point out that the HE actually said I don’t have any details on if/when it will come back. but I see jennia11 has just pointed that out. However, to all those of you say it is only temporary, that doesn’t indicate temporary to me.
In which case, presumably we should all take note of raincoaster’s advice:
If you want staff to take note of your protest, notify them via your dashboard.which is exactly what I am going to do. I suggest the rest of you, do the same, if you haven’t already done so.

Well, I will when I find a suitable address….. having just discovered this:
“We believe everyone deserves fantastic support for their WordPress.com blog. Our backlog of requests has consistently grown as our team of 10 receives nearly 8,000 messages a week. To get caught up and give our customers the support they expect with paid upgrades, we made the difficult decision to limit the contact form to customers with upgrades. Once we are caught up we will work on bringing a high level of support back for everyone.”
It seems the poor are not entitled to a voice?

Really, really, dislike the new topics format. Ugh. Totally a pain to browse, seems to take forever to load, and seems to be a detriment to both bloggers and readers. Can’t you bring back the old form? Please?????

@westerner54
Note that I answered you here > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-get-a-post-to-appear-under-topics-in-wordpress?replies=4#post-882503 -
I’ve posted elsewhere on this matter. But seeing as this seems to be the main thread, I’d like to add my voice to the mix.
Regardless of whether the disabling of Topics page is for a necessary fix or improvement…
A. This should and could have been managed better. There are means and ways for coders to test changes before implementing changes live.
B. If it wasn’t possible to test before going live, communicating with the WP users beforehand would have helped. I find it worrisome that, aside from one very vague post from a staff member that’s buried in a thread that’s since been locked, there has been no further information regarding this issue. No timeline, no official update, no nothing.
C. Not all blogs are online dairies; some of them are genuine attempts at building a business. The topics change is hurting our ability to build a reader base and network.
I know WP is providing a free service to many people, I get that features need to be updated, tweaked and changed, and I’m all for that. But how this has been handled smacks of disrespect for WP’s users.
The bloggers here are a major contributor to WP’s success, after all.

Does the reference to users with paid upgrades mean anyone who paid the minimum for a yearly domain name, or are we talking about users who pay a higher amount for other site-related upgrades? Just wondering if my message will get through or not.

I’ve not spoken up about this, yet :) If numbers make a difference, I’ll add one more voice to the crowd. :)
I’ve avoided using the reader as much as possible because of the slow load times. I used to enjoy going to the different topics now and again to find other blogs I’d be interested in, but now that it is within the Reader, I won’t any longer. It was much easier to peruse many blogs in a shorter period of time when it was in the older format.
-
just used the help button on dashboard to contact staff. so far, a fine example of exactly how not to roll out changes to an active and vociferous community….
-
I am with all others on the change to topics. WP was ruined by this and the new email comments. I have NOT checked ‘Notify me of followups posts by email’, yet they probably will. It is like spam!
-
The former topics page was a community-building tool and a major advantage of wordpress.com. It was fantastic, a great way for me to see and be seen and to quickly identify those blogs I want to follow. This new development is a disappointment and cumbersome and leaves me with no incentive to concede to the limitations of wordpress.com, i.e. remain here..
