Please explain, "This website does not supply identify information"

  • Unknown's avatar

I just noticed an exclamation point to the left of my URL and also a triangle next to the sync icon to the right of it. When I hover over the exclamation point, the pop-up tip states, “This website does not supply identity information.” How do I correct this? Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Will you provide a screenshot please? I’ll tag this thread for Staff attention. You can use http://snag.gy/ to share screenshots and link to them here. If you use the WordPress.com guide for screenshots http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ you can and upload it to your Media Library, and return to this thread to provide the file name so Staff can examine it.

Here’s the snag.gy way. I’ll do the Media Library one in a minute.

    Thank you.

Just one screenshot from http://snag.gy/ is fine. I believe what you are referring to could be the SSL security Staff have implemented re: changing our http:// links to the more secure encrypted https:// links. However, Staff will confirm that when they get to this thread.

Thanks. If that’s the case, will they explain how bloggers can ensure their links are secure?

Staff will explain this to you when they get to this thread but in the meanwhile you can read http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

    Hello there,

When I click on the icon you’re describing, I see this message, “Your connection to daughterofslaveancestry.wordpress.com is encrypted with modern cryptography. However, this page includes other resources which are not secure.”

As not all the items on your site are housed at WordPress.com (ie. third-party links to non https sites), you are seeing this message.

Upon a cursory glance of some of the third-party items you’ve added to your site, I can tell you that the widget with the Geneabloggers link is one of the items causing this to occur. When I tried to add it to a secure test site, my test site also had the exclamation point/triangle icon. When I deleted your link/image, the expected https icon reappeared.

You may experiment to see which other (if any) outside links on your site might also be causing this to happen.

I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

I’ll experiment; but do you recommend removing the offending links to maintain the integrity of my blog? Will the warning continue if I remove the GeneaBloggers badge and just link to it in the blogroll? Thanks for your prompt reply.

    Hi again,

To be absolutely honest, if I were you, I would keep the link. It’s meaningful to your site, and it’s not disrupting the viewing of your site. It’s not a dangerous link.

That icon is a warning (that I suspect very few people pay attention to), rather than an emergency notice.

If you have any suspicions about your links, check them out. At the very least, this will make you more knowledgable should any of your visitors ask about the warning icon.

Regarding the link — and moving it to your blogroll — it’s worth experimenting with, if it’s enough of a concern for you. However, I cannot be certain if the issue will be alleviated or not, since the link will be the same. It will only be displayed as text, rather than as an image link.

Drop me a note if you choose to do this. I’d like to hear your findings.

Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much!
