Please fix the expired overlay

One of the sites I subscribe to has an expired domain name – which gives that “expired” overlay with “please contact owner” – but the overlay can’t be closed – – and yes James I tried Firefox and IE and no go – the owner is still Posting but I guess no notice in the Dashboard

How about fixing the overlay so we can actually get to the web site to maybe find a contact form or leave a comment?

Oh no! This domain thisisntreality.com expired 8 days ago!

Please contact the owner of this website and ask them to renew the domain. Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to view the site at this web address: thisisntreality.wordpress.com.

Or maybe someone can figure out how to get past the junk overlay and notify the owner

  • We’re looking into this and also some alternatives.

Please note that by this point, we have sent three emails to the address on the user’s account and placed a large notice in their Dashboard.

The original intent of the non-dismissible notice was to encourage readers with alternative forms of contact to get in touch with the blogger.

Technically, the domain should really stop functioning when it expires, but we do keep it up with the notice in hopes that they’ll be able to recover it before additional fees have to be applied.

@macmanx-Sorry to keep harping on the same old thing, but that is a Catch-22.

If the wordpress.com address keeps redirecting to the domain, then there’s no way to view the site at its original wordpress.com address, as the overlay suggests. It just keeps looping back to the domain overlay ad infinitum and ad nauseum. As @auxclass has already mentioned elsewhere, what is a site visitor going to do about the expired domain if they don’t know the site owner personally? Go do a WHOIS and write the owner an email or call them? Not likely.

Also, why penalize site visitors from viewing the site? Better a large yellow sticky in the user‘s dashboard for the same period that y’all are sending out those three emails. Those stickies have no problem appearing for the 5-second “would you recommend WordPress.com” survey or when WordPress.com has concerns about the content of a user’s site.

Again, just my 2¢ worth and I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this topic.

Some blogs have contact forms and phone numbers and with the overlay you can’t get there from here.

I have seen several non-profits that had domain name problems, they had phone numbers and contact info on the web site – I would have expected someone to call a place that you use regular and let them know there was a problem with their domain name. Some of the non-profits lost their names and in at least one case the name was picked up by a squatter and held for ransom
