No animation in blog headers will work on wordpress.com blogs. Please read these entries so you know the other limitations as well > http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

Have you been using these instructions forum in the support documentation? http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/
Also note that static Pages and Posts are not the same. They have many differences but none that relate to this question. The instruction for uplaoding images to them are the same.

Sorry about the unintended duplicate entry. The animated images I have in my test blog display fine in posts and on pages.
-
Or maybe you uploaded a gif that wasn’t in the right dimensions, and it got converted to a jpg by cropping. Resized gifs don’t work. For the theme you’re using, the image must be 904×160 px.

@Panos
I stand corrected then because I tried one and it did not work. I must have done something odd with it. See also > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/help-47?replies=2 -
@tt: I have seen animated headers, and I had tried them myself too. Tried one again now, just in case there’s something wrong with Digg3: it works.
-
Well then I must have goofed up. Can you get an animated image to display in a text widget? I can’t.
-
-
Works. Try this, for example:
<img src="http://wpbtips.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/creatures_001.gif" /> -
How did you try to do it? If you upload it and insert it into a post, then copy-paste the resultant code into a text widget, it won’t work unless you delete the width and height declarations.
-
Yes, animated gifs work in both headers and in text widgets. As Panos described. I was foolish enough some time ago (argh, last summer!!!) to give it a try. LOL
Annoying? yes.
Though perhaps just a color change of text would be OK.I tried to make a sort of fake slide show of posts.
Tacky. and the gifs were not link-able, which was why I wanted to try it…
