Please help! Can't understand Menu and Blogs

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, this should be relatively simple, but I just can’t understand how to do this! Basically here is my website:

    https://printandparty.wordpress.com/

I want to have links across the top including ‘DIY Kits’, ‘Blog’, ‘Freebies’ etc and I want people to be able to click these and go to a section dedicated to that area. I’ve tried to add a blog or two, but for some reason it sticks to the menu instead of going inside one of the menu areas. Plus it seems that every area has all the blogs I write inside them!! I’ve only opened this today, but I’ve spent the entire day researching how to create something which should be simple, but it’s really not!!
Please please pleaaase help me out! :) Also, please note that I will continue to try and fix this so even if my site looks normal and maybe I’ve sort of managed to figure it half-out by the time you’ve read this, please respond anyway!!
    Thank you so much!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

oh God, now it seems that if I click one of the menu categories instead of taking me to the correct area, it’s stuck on the ‘about me’ page. whhhhy!! D:

There are many common errors, misunderstandings and misconceptions when creating custom menus and there are some tweaks you can use to improve your custom menu as well. Here is more information:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/posts-on-pages/
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

We organize posts by assigning categories to them, and dynamic category pages automatically created by the software when we publish posts are not the same as static Pages that we bloggers create.

Please read this first Post vs. Page http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

    (1) There is only one page we can post to in any blog.
    (2) The static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ we bloggers create do not automatically update.

Only the dynamic pages like Archives, Categories and Tags created by the software when we publish a post will update automatically update with new posts.

By default the front page of the blog is the Page that displays all posts in your blog. You can create a static front page and have your published posts display on another page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ but doing that does not change what follows.

Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.

We assign categories to posts. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/
Until we publish a post with a category assigned to it the relevant dynamic categories page will not have any data that it can display.

This guide will walk you through how to create category pages for your blog, to display groupings of similar posts on pages other than your front page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

    Create a custom menu

Add dynamic categories and sub-categories pages to it

    Create order and sub-menus (dropdowns)

Thank you timethief for all this information!! I’ll try my best to read and understand. It’s unfortunate that we can only put blogs / writing on one section. On the free theme I have, the download page shows a way in which you can display only an image (which you can click on for more info) as well as a slider image…thing!
I have no idea how to set this up and cannot see where you would, but perhaps this is a better alternative.
It’s unfortunate that all the blogs automatically go to the homepage as it would be more useful to have different categories displaying relevant bits of information, and the homepage serving only as a welcoming area that will lead you onto the write part of the site to go check out.

Please work though what I provided because I believe what you want will be achieved by creating a custom menu.
