Please help! – Locked out of domain name email address

  • Unknown's avatar

I am desperately needing help sorting an issue out with my domain email address.

I originally had a wordpress site and domain name, then swapped over to squarespace.
I set up an email address to my domain name: (email visible only to moderators and staff)
This worked fine for 8 months then all of a sudden stopped working and I have been losing business over it.
Payments are up to date and according to squarespace it is working.
When I email (email visible only to moderators and staff), it automatically sends me this:

smtp1-fwd.dca.wordpress.com rejected your message to the following email addresses:
(email visible only to moderators and staff) ((email visible only to moderators and staff))
Your message couldn’t be delivered because an email server outside Office 365 reported an error that it couldn’t relay your message. It’s likely that the email server isn’t correctly set up to receive and relay messages from your domain. To fix this, forward this non-delivery report (NDR) message to your email admin.
    For Email Admins
The sender’s message was routed to an email server outside Office 365 but that email server returned the error below. It’s likely that the email server that reported error isn’t set up correctly to receive and relay messages sent from the sender’s domain. The server is not an Office 365 server – it will usually be one of your on-premises servers in a hybrid environment, a server at a smart host email service that you’re trying to route messages through, or possibly even a server at an email hosting service you used in the past yet still have mail flow settings pointing to (for example, when your MX record at your domain registrar still points to your previous email service provider).
To fix this, check the server name to determine what domain, service, or server is reporting the error. The email server needs to be configured to either accept messages from anonymous users or to include the sending domain or sending IP address in its list of authenticated senders. On an Exchange server, you can set this up in the server’s receive connector. If it’s a smart host managed by another service or partner, contact the service or partner to configure their servers to accept and relay messages from your senders. Also, work with your domain registrar to make sure your MX records are properly configured.
Since the problem is likely due to misconfigured settings on an email server outside Office 365, unfortunately Office 365 support won’t be able to help fix this issue.

    smtp1-fwd.dca.wordpress.com gave this error:
Remote server returned not permitted to relay -> 554 5.7.1 <(email visible only to moderators and staff)>: Relay access denied

I have also contacted wild west domains and squarespace who said my domain name is still hosted with squarespace.
Any help would be GREATY appreciated.

  • Hi there,

Your account does not own the domain, rebeccasturgess.com. That domain was registered by a different WordPress.com username account, and we can only help that user with issues regarding the domain.

That said, this domain expired on 31 March, and has already been removed from our system. That is why the email is no longer working.

It looks like the domain is not in redemption yet, so I should still be able to recover it without you having to pay an additional fee, but I can only do so at the domain owner’s request.

Pleas log in as the username account you used to purchase that domain and reply here to confirm, and I can get the recovery process started for you.

    Ok thanks so much!
I am confused as to why my website is up and running then and payments are regularly being taken out on Squarespace.

I can’t remember and have no idea what other wordpress account I created. Is there anyway you could find out the username or email address for that account so I can start trying to workout what my password could have been?

    Thank you! :)

  • The domain is not in redemption yet, so it still works even though it’s expired. The moment it enters redemption it will stop working.

You pay Squarespace for hosting, not for the domain. You registered the domain with us, which makes us your domain provider, and which means you need to pay us to renew the domain each year.

I cannot give you details regarding a different account, no. I see last year that domain also expired, and in that case we had to recover it from redemption for you, so you should have several emails regarding that. You would also have received a receipt via email when you paid for the recovery and renewal of the domain.

Please check any other email addresses you own for those emails from about a year ago. That will give you the address you need to use to reset the password in order to log into the correct account.

Failing that, you’ll need to follow our account recovery steps, here:

Ok, I have tried every email address that I own and remember! And no luck… is there anyone I can speak with over the phone? It hasn’t been working since the end of last year and I haven’t been able to find a customer service number or tech team for wordpress.

What are my options as I am unable to login to the account I created and forgot about. If there was anyway I could find the email address attached I could login but I can’t for life of me remember any other email addresses!
When is it due to expire?

There is no phone support. kokkieh is on WordPress.COM Staff and has already assisted you above. http://en.support.wordpress.com/account-recovery/ Know that only Account Recovery Staff can assist you.

  • I have sent an email to the address associated with the account that owns the domain. If you receive it, please reply there.

If you don’t, please follow the account recovery steps on the page both @timethief and I linked to above. That is the only other way to regain access to the account, as we cannot tell you the email address for the account under any circumstances.
