Please Help Me With Background Image!
-
Hello
I’m having trouble adding a background image to my blog Taigh Brighde http://www.taighbrighde.wordpress.com
I’m currently using 2012 and will either stay with this theme or will move to the Adventure Journal theme.
I’m having trouble adding a background image, can’t seem to do it right, nothing I’m doing is working, and it’s driving me up a wall!
Is there a way to figure out the measurements for a background image for a theme like how they have the header image listing? I’m about 90 percent blind so I need something straight forward like such and such wide by such and such tall. I have a friend who makes my art and she can adjust it to any size but I need to know what the measurements are before I can tell her to resize it.
Please respond and help me soon!
Thanks,Rob

I don’t have a definitive answer for you–it’s actually close to impossible to provide one since it depends so much on the viewing screens of the people who visit your site, but there is a thoughtful and hopefully helpful discussion of your question here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/background-image-recommended-size?replies=11

I already read that article and it hasn’t really helped so far. Every time I try to upload a background image it refuses to accept it like it’s either too large or too small.
-
Are you getting a specific error message or does it just seem like nothing is happening? If it’s the second, it might just be that loading an image that is big enough takes longer than you expect. If it’s the first, could you share the error message word for word? That would be very helpful.
What happens when you try to upload a photo that is 1500px wide and then choose “center”, “no repeat”, and “fixed” as your display options?
-
I just tried that mesurement and it still didn’t work. It’s the second one and it’s not due to upload time as I let it upload all the way through. As I say it goes to upload but then just disappears as if it’s too big or too small and says that no file was selected.
-
Gottcha. Just to be clear, you are clicking “choose file” and then once the file is chosen also clicking the “upload” button?
It shouldn’t matter, but you might try removing your existing background image and then try uploading the new one.
What’s the file size on the image you are trying to load? Is there a chance you can’t upload it because you’ve reached your storage quota?
I know that’s a lot of questions, just trying to see if approaching the problem from a different angle helps.

I actually solved part of my problem.
I’m used to seeing an image pop up and the file still being mentioned in the “select file” catagory that I completely overlooked what I had thus far. I am able to upload background images but I can’t see them due to having my screen set to white on black contrast to keep my eyes pain free. But now I know I can at least post background images…..Though now I have a new problem: my friend who looked at the test example I uploaded says that while she can see that there is an image for the background, she can only see it as a border because the white of the page blocks most of it out. Anyway to fix this?

it looks like you’ve changed themes since we last spoke. With the “Stay” theme (that’s the one you have now) you could remove the light grey background with the following CSS code:
#page{ background: none; }Note: in order for this to work you’d need to purchase the CSS upgrade. If you were to go back to the theme you were using before (twenty twelve I believe) you would see quite a bit more of the background image without needing the upgrade.
I would also caution you about making this change with this theme. If you choose a background image with bright colors (like the one you have now) and remove the current page color you are likely to introduce some significant readability issues.
-
That’s so disapointing as I do enjoy the Stay theme….But I’m too cheap and wordpress is to pricey to upgrade……
Would the same way to change to transparancy apply to the 2012? Is your caution for the Stay or 2012 theme?
-
the 2012 theme has a narrower content area so much more of the background image shows–even without mucking with the CSS–which is good because then you don’t have to pay for it :).
That having been said, If you want a theme where the background image really shines without the custom design upgrade you might consider a theme like Fictive (http://fictivedemo.wordpress.com/).
You’ll still have to work to make sure the text in your widgets is legible on top of your image but that should be doable with some futzing.
-
Know any other themes like Fictive? I like it but when I add the header image to it, the header gets cut off. Otherwise I’d be willing to use it.

Your best bet is to scroll through here until you find one that you like:

I only looked for a second, but this one seems promising based on what you’ve mentioned your criteria are so far:

I don’t see a theme called “Clean House” on this page: http://theme.wordpress.com/ where did you find it?
-
Hmmm that’s ood because it was listed there when I went looking in the link you gave me. But it doesn’t matter because I finally found yoko and adore it…..If I can get it tweaked to what I want then I will most certaintly go with this one.
So what do I need to do with this one to make the background image seeable? I’m not going to use the image I have posted now for the final product but what I have right now is just a test to see roughly what needs to be changed. Is the size I’m currently using for the background image a good size?
Once I know everything will work properly and have a decent size in mind I will hand it over to my artist to finalize everything for me.
-
if you don’t want to buy the CSS upgrade, there is nothing you can do with Yoko (or most, if not all, themes) to change the settings to see more of the background image. The only option is to find a theme that automatically shows as much as you want to see.
Generally speaking the background image is also not a huge priority, so as long as visitors see enough of it to set a “mood” you should bd fine.
As for the image it’s not pixelated at all so as far as I can tell the size you chose works.
