Please Help with a Password
-
Please if you have an answer to this question, please reply.
I entered a password to protect a page on my blog. It works the first time you try to access the page, then you enter the password, but then that page stays unlocked so the anybody can view it. I can’t have that because this has private contact information that only specific people should be allowed to view. And no, it isn’t posted yet, so don’t even try!
Anyways, does anybody know how to put a password on a page OR EVEN BETTER is there a way to password protect the downloading of a file, that would be even easier…

if i’m not wrong, the reason the password protected page stays open is because you have entered the password, and you’re still logged in. to make sure that it’s still protected, all you have to do is log out. it should show the ‘enter your password to view this post’ thing, instead of showing the full post as done after you entered the password while logged in.

I wish that was the case sulz. The way the password protected post works is with setting a cookie. If I put in the password (logged in or not), the page is accessible until you remove the cookies on that browser. Even more interesting is having multiple entries with the same password can be viewed once you have that password entered! So if it is important to have people enter a password for only 1 post, all the passwords have to be different!
Having a download in a password protected post will protect the link from being visible, but on wordpress.com blogs you cannot stop people from accessing the file directly if they find out the URL from someone or if they had access and then you changed the password as they already know the URL.
The safest way to keep content protected on wordpress is to make a private blog and then just add members. The password protection on posts is good as long as you train your members and viewers to clear their browser cache if accessing on public or unsecure computers!
Hope that helps.
