Please help with spam question-totally confused
-
I checked “spam” in my dashboard for the first time tonight.
I don’t understand what has been happening.
here is an example. My post, attributed to another author, and on a blog that looks unusual: http://www.crowhoney.com/?p=1401
There are quite a few of these. Some attribute me as the author. Some don’t. The links, however do go to my posts.
Should I delete these comments/links/spam ( not sure what they are called)?
What purpose does it serve the person who does this?
Is spam ever a legitimate way of achieving something?Thank you for your help.

i think those are trackbacks. those links are from sploggers. it’s a common thing to happen after you’ve been blogging a while. while it’s not right, there isn’t much you can do about it. you should delete those links and ignore it.
if you want to do something about sploggers stealing your content, here is a relevant thread:

Thank you for the very fast reply sulz, I appreciate the advice. I’ll have to get reading – I have no idea what a splogger is, or a trackback…

trackbacks are like comments, except that the comment is posted on their blog instead of yours. sploggers are spam bloggers, they steal content from other bloggers, put it up on their own blogs which are filled with ads. kind of like earning money from your writings. these are just loose definitions of trackbacks and sploggers, in layman’s terms. =)

Not ALL trackbacks are from sploggers, though, just to be clear. Always check them out and see who they are and if they’re legit, let it stand.
