Please, I need help with the Portfolios function on the Illustratr Theme.

    Trying to display what I believe to be a Portfolio Page, linked to my contributor Menu. Have spent days going through the help pages trying to work it out – without success.

    The blog I need help with is http://themonochromemuse.com

    I am trying to achieve the same effect as the Contributor navigation at Monochromia https://groupexpo.wordpress.com/contributors/main-contributors/ Is this possible?

    Thanks.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Ellie-Dee.

    The page you linked to has the ‘Portfolio Page Template’ assigned to it. You can assigned this template to your Contributors page by firstly heading to the editor for that page:

    https://themonochromemuse.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=41&action=edit

    In the Page Attributes module, you’ll see a ‘Template’ dropdown from which you’re able to select ‘Portfolio Page Template.’ Update once you’ve selected this option from the dropdown, and you’ll then see your portfolio projects automatically pulled into that page.

    Hope that helps! Please don’t hesitate to let me know if any of that needs clarifying.

    So far, so absolutely brilliant! Really clear. Now…

    How do I get rid of the title from the ‘Main Muses’ page? It’s a sub-page under ‘Contributors’ now.

    How do I get everyone’s thumbnail photo to be the same size and line up symmetrically in the three columns? I know same size image files will firstly be a good start but will that sort it out?

    How do I get the individuals posts, (photos from their posts) to appear on their portfolio page? Will the individual portfolio pages update automatically as contributors add more posts to the blog?

    How (in my CSS) can I change the background colour of the drop-down item menu from white to another colour? Can the size of the menu label (box) be adjusted smaller? (I’ve resized menu labels before in the Truly Minimal Theme).

    Many thanks for your help so far with setting up the Portfolio Template Page, really appreciate it – no idea why I couldn’t get it to work!

    Hi Ellie-Dee!

    How do I get rid of the title from the ‘Main Muses’ page? It’s a sub-page under ‘Contributors’ now.

    It’s possible to remove the title with some custom CSS.

    To add custom CSS, you firstly need to go to My Sites in WordPress.com, select themonochromemuse.com, then choose the option to Customize in the left sidebar. You’ll reach what’s known as the WordPress.com Customizer:

    https://wordpress.com/customize/themonochromemuse.com/

    From here, click on the CSS tab. Below the introductory text in the resulting editor, copy and paste the following CSS:

    .page-title, .page-header:after {
      display: none;
    }

    How do I get everyone’s thumbnail photo to be the same size and line up symmetrically in the three columns? I know same size image files will firstly be a good start but will that sort it out?

    I tested this on my own test site, and you’re right that having images that are equal in height will line your images up in the way you described.

    How do I get the individuals posts, (photos from their posts) to appear on their portfolio page? Will the individual portfolio pages update automatically as contributors add more posts to the blog?

    Are you trying to pull the post’s from a specific author into their portfolio page? If so, the Display Posts shortcode will help you to achieve this. We have some information on this in the following guide:

    Display Posts Shortcode

    How (in my CSS) can I change the background colour of the drop-down item menu from white to another colour? Can the size of the menu label (box) be adjusted smaller? (I’ve resized menu labels before in the Truly Minimal Theme).

    .main-navigation ul li:hover>ul {
    background-color: #555;
    }

    You can replace #555 with the HEX value that corresponds with the colour you want your dropdown menu to be.

    Many thanks for your help so far with setting up the Portfolio Template Page, really appreciate it – no idea why I couldn’t get it to work!

    You’re welcome! If there’s anything extra I can help out or if you have any questions around the guides I linked to, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

    Thanks very much.

    Have replaced the sub-menu background colour (not final choice, but serves the purpose at the moment) but I’d like the box that ‘Main Muses’ is contained in to be narrower (left to right) can that be achieved?

    Am not sure if the shortcode is what I need and, to be honest, I have no idea where in a post or page I would put the code anyway, sorry!

    I’m trying to pull in the individual authors’ portfolio pages, as per the Monochromia example (link below) whereby clicking on the image takes you to a page with a portfolio of images above the text-bio. Hope that make sense.

    Hi, Just thought,

    should I be linking each Author’s portfolio page to a Carousel? Would that give the same result as the Monochromia set up? As per: https://groupexpo.wordpress.com/portfolio/stacy

    Look forward to your reply :)

    Hi Ellie-Dee.

    I’d like the box that ‘Main Muses’ is contained in to be narrower (left to right) can that be achieved?

    The width of the dropdown can be changed with some custom CSS too, you can use the following snippet:

    .main-navigation ul ul a {
    width: 100px;
    }

    Change the value for width as you wish. :)

    I’m trying to pull in the individual authors’ portfolio pages, as per the Monochromia example (link below) whereby clicking on the image takes you to a page with a portfolio of images above the text-bio.

    The example link that you gave is making use of our built-in gallery feature, with a gallery added at the top of each of its projects. Our guide here explains how to set up and customise galleries, for you:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/

    Let me know if that guide’s helpful for you in setting up a gallery within your projects, or if it brings up any questions.

    Hope you’re having a lovely weekend! :)

    Hi Siobhyb,

    Had a great weekend thanks – a good long ‘Bank Holiday’ one here in the UK of three days duration.

    Thanks for the custom code for the drop down box. I’ve now resized it to what I was trying to achieve – many thanks.

    The gallery guide was very helpful thanks – struggled a little with getting galleries on the individual author portfolio pages to link to a carousel, but managed in the end. The question it now brings up is:

    Is there a way to automatically update these individual portfolio galleries whenever an Author creates a new post with an image? Currently, there are nine authors (photographers) and this number will increase as the blog grows. I’d prefer for Authors’ galleries to get individually updated each time they published a new post if it’s possible.

    Did wonder whether using portfolio tags would overcome this, but I don’t know how. Not yet having had any success using shortcode on pages, some assistance with just how to enter the string would be very helpful if that’s going to be the solution with this.

    Thanks for all your help to date, hope your day is going well :)

    Hi Ellie-Dee.

    I’m glad to see you’ve got the galleries up and running on your pages. They’re looking good! :) I’m afraid that there’s not a way for you to automate the process of adding images to your galleries, they’ll need to be edited manually in order to add extra images.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Siobhyb,

    Oh dear, that’s a shame!! Never mind, I’ll give the required level of access to all contributors to be able to edit galleries and keep my fingers crossed that everyone remembers to update them as they add new posts. I’m assuming Author level will do the job, is this correct?

    Thanks very much for all your help with the gallery, portfolio and customisation tweeks, it’s very much appreciated. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    You’ll need to assign the Editor role in order to enable your users to edit portfolio projects, Authors aren’t able to do so.

    I’m glad I could help with those tweeks. :) You know where I am if any other questions come up.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ahh, thanks for that, I’ll upgrade everyone to Editor.

    It’s been a great experience and a pleasure learning with you. I’ll get in touch again for any questions that may arise in the future. :D

    Should I close this topic now, or leave it open?
