    How do we report faults?

    Is there some way to actually reach a live person at WP, to give them our opinions of displeasure? Do the corporate people read these forums?

    At least some of you people can post. My page won’t scroll down ,and I can only see ONE LINE of what I’ve typed; the rest is lost way down below and I can’t scroll down to it. Not to mention can’t post photos, change fonts, make paragraph breaks, all the other complaints you already know about.

    tpenguinltgs , can you post again, how to to use your script (which I dont’ even know what a script is, but I’m desperate) to get back to the original editor? thanks

    @timethief
    When you mention that staff did monitor the use of both monitors and as a result deleted the the link to the classic one: do you want to say that too few people chose the classic one by that link? If so, it’s a classic way of poll manipulating to have that link at the bottom of the page, that far down that normally nobody sees it, unless they take the trouble to scroll all the way down – something that doesn’t occur to many people as they simply, from the usual policy of the WP gods, can’t expect to find a helpful link. So, absolutely no wonder if only a minority used that link. Btw, I have had to go to that rigmarole of scrolling down and then clicking on that link for the last 6 months, and I have always left my opinion in the poll that came up. And now I have the additional nuisance of going an even much more circuitry route to open the classic editor just because some stubborn developers believe their ideas mus necessarily be the best – contrary to what lots of people here try to tell them.

    @thewallpaperlady
    Reporting faults is through this forum, and staff do read it.

    Here are the step-by-step instructions for my script:

    1. Install the appropriate add-on for your browser:

      It will be much easier if you use Firefox or Chrome. If you don’t know what your browser, you can visit whatismybrowser.com to find out.

    2. With Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey, click on “Install” below. For TrixIE, you’ll have to put it in the Scripts folder as specified in the Readme. I have no idea how NinjaKit handles it.
      [Install]

    That’s the hardest part. After installing, everything should redirect to the old editor (although it may load the new one briefly) without any input from you.

    New method: bookmarklet

    This is for people who want something easy without having to deal with a script. I’d post the direct link here, but WordPress will just strip it.
    So instead, go to this page and drag the link on that page to your bookmarks bar. This will act as your “Edit in classic mode” button. When the new editor comes up, click on the bookmark. This should work even on the “Beep beep boop” screen.

    Technical details:
    This uses the same code as the fallback function for the script:
    window.location.replace(document.getElementsByClassName('switch-to-classic')[0].children[0].href)

    @wpvins Hear hear! Absolutely spot on. It’s a shabby cheap trick. Originally that tab to the Classic version ( of stats) was at the top of the page but was very quickly removed and placed in as unobtrusive a spot as could be found. We already HATE scrolling and of course they required even more of the distasteful scrolling to reach our choice … which is Classic.

    I scroll down every time and every time choose Classic.

    Again …. the developers are showing both inexperience and pettiness. Resorting to trickery to skew a poll to get the results they know they can’t get by a legitimate and honest method.

    Apparently, p tags will automatically be inserted for you in list items…
    Good to know. If someone with editing capabilities could please remove the p tags, it would be greatly appreciated.

    tepen: Thanks. But you could use more plain English in my opinion. I’ll be making an effort to implement my solution. I feel like the Dutch boy plugging the fast appearing holes in the dike with his fingers.

    I’m so disappointed in WPs managers. I want to scream.

    You’ve got this unpleasant being crammed in the lower right hand corner of the page situation to deal with. If you use the html to get a classic look and behavior, you end up with something that’s broken, really. My scroll button only goes a short distance. If the post is long, I’ve got to use my mouse wheel. I couldn’t resize the page. Actually, I couldn’t find the bottom of my post!

    Thanks a lot WP monkeys. Thanks for the attitude. You’re going to be getting more of this, and in harsher terms, as time goes forward, should you ask for it. I don’t give a damn whether your blog is free. There’s only so much abuse I’ll take before I start to acknowledge it publicly. And it’s good that your invisible. Because you’d end up as part of the story in my public squawking.

    Call this rant the new and improved Arrby.

    I’ve got the Greasemonkey add-on. Already I’m seeing settings. I have no idea about them, which is why plain English is crucial. Regardless, I will endeavor to implement the fix right now and report back.

  • Unknown's avatar

    The instructions for Greasemonkey, above, were: 1. install it

    I installed it and it did nothing at all. I’m using Firefox. Now, I’m guessing that there’s some settings here that I need to address. But I’m forced to guess or go off researching it for who knows how long, with no guarantee that that diversion will pan out.

    The easy solution tpen offers, to bookmark a page called ‘Edit in class editor’ didn’t do a thing for me.

  • Unknown's avatar

    arrby, after installing Greasemonkey, did you install the script?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @arrby
    Once you install Greasemonkey, you have to install the script by clicking the link. Having Greasemonkey alone won’t do anything for you, and you shouldn’t have to configure any settings.

    As for the “easy solution”, you shouldn’t be bookmarking the page that I linked to, but instead dragging the “Edit in classic editor” link itself to your bookmarks bar.

    Please let me know if you still have any issues with it.

    @ wpvins,

    If so, it’s a classic way of poll manipulating to have that link at the bottom of the page, that far down that normally nobody sees it, unless they take the trouble to scroll all the way down

    Manipulation is right. Had WP placed the link to the new editor at the bottom of the classic editor, they would have gotten similar results, and could now (using the same faulty logic) confidently find that interest in the new editor was found to be consistently low and falling over the period of observation.

    They got the results they wanted by manipulating two supposedly equivalent alternatives, as follows:

    1. Prominently announce the link to the new editor, with a sales pitch that includes an exclamation mark! — “There’s now an easier way to create on WordPress.com! Switch to the improved posting experience.”
    Key words in the pitch include: now, easier, improved, and experience.

    2. Inconspicuously stash the link to classic editor, without the selling push, on the new editor toward the bottom of the page. Make sure it’s not visible without scrolling, so that it will certainly be missed by a significant percentage of members who are not otherwise informed of it’s presence.

    @arrby: very plain English:

    “It took me a little while to work out what the screen shot was indicating, so for the benefit of other slow people…” Which is what this ‘slow person’ was saying. There’s aso ‘slow’ getting to the point. Sometimes you have to take your time to make sure that you’re getting your point across. ‘You’ (the person with the tip) may know your subject. But that doesn’t mean those who you are offering your tips to do. Say it clearly the first time would be my recommendation. Or be prepared to follow up when ‘slow’ people like myself ask for clarification.

  • Unknown's avatar

    tepen: Thanks. I don’t know what the issue is with my Firefox, but the dragging of pages to my toolbars bookmark no longer works. I’ve emailed Mozilla about it, but they haven’t responded. I therefore manually bookmarked the page (via Bookmarks > Add Bookmark). You’re saying that the only way your solution will work is if I drag it? What’s the difference? And the link which I’m supposed to click on; I see only one link on the page bookmarked and I’ve clicked on it.

    And maybe it ‘did’ work. I checked my blog and tried the editing feature. Maybe I expected a dramatic change in appearance. What I did notice that now I’ve got the entire scrollbar and can make it to the bottom of the page with it.

    I’ll double and triple check. Later…

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yep! We’re good! Thanks again. And no thanks to the WP monkeys (which is what they call themselves if anyone’s wondering).

  • Unknown's avatar

    Glad to hear it’s working.

    You’re saying that the only way your solution will work is if I drag it?

    The other way you could do it is to right-click on the link and click “Bookmark This Link”. I just suggested dragging it to your bookmarks bar because it’s more useful that way.
    The link on that page is a special link because it has an action attached to it; clicking on it won’t do anything. The action only has an effect when you click on the bookmark in the new editor. That’s why you have to bookmark the link itself and not the page that it’s on.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @tpenguinltg
    Thanks for the bookmarklet. I prefer this solution as it gives me more choice. Also, it will be much easier to inform my 50 or so bloggers what to do.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @ tpenguinltg,
    I’ve got the new “Edit in classic editor” (shortened to “ice”) bookmark, but nothing could have been easier than activating the Greasemonkey script. After adding GM to FF, just two clicks are necessary to activate it. You’ll never be forced to see the new editor again. However, if for some reason you must visit that wasteland — e.g. to see if it’s gotten any worse — GM can be disabled with a click, and enabled again with another click.
    Thanks again!

    @arrby: I was the one who gave the link to this thread (do you remember?):

    I would have been happy with a “thank you“.
