Please Reinstate the Option of Choice to Use the Old Publishing Format

    This is my first post in a WP forum even though I’ve been using WP for the past five years. I can’t wrap my head around how abysmal the new post editor is. There’s NOTHING at all professional about it’s look, design, or user-experience.

    Sadly, I’ve not yet had any luck with the “fixes” here yet, but I’ll keep sifting through the responses. I just want a user-friendly text-editor that works. The old one was WONDERFUL. What gives, WordPress?
    *sigh*

    Never mind, I found a way in finally. Wish it were more obvious and dearly hope it doesn’t disappear!

    @tpenguinltg

    That Learn page hasn’t been updated since March 2013…

    Sure, the dumbed-down editor doesn’t look quite like BBB but it does demonstrate what WP were (and hopefully still are) thinking.

    This might also explain why pages are still edited with the Classic Editor?

    @ dandelionsalad,

    Truly WP should bring the link back for all users to choose between the 2 editors like this thread stated at the beginning.

    The script is even better, IMO. With it, the classic editor opens with the edit links and you can disable the script with a click of the (Greasemonkey) smiling monkey head in your toolbar. That’s with Firefox. I presume the script works similarly with the other browsers. When you disable it, the next time you open an edit link on a post it opens to the new editor. Enable it again, and update, and you’re back on the classic editor.

    I’m trying to blog about this sorry situation. I’d love to co-post, adding in some of the very informed commentary from some of the WP users in this forum. It would help too, if my WP wasn’t COMPLETELY jammed. I’ve got an image, taken from a screen shot of an email (notice of comment from this forum) stuck uploading. Why isn’t there a cancel button for that? Nothing I do can help me get around it. I can’t ignore it and upload something else. (I tried recapturing the email. I then tried changing the extension from .jpeg to .png) I logged off and logged back on. Nada.

  • Unknown's avatar

    knashermac’s post, 2:14am, was a real keeper. I might just insert that into my post, if I can ever get past the jam. Is it the hour maybe? Is it a maintenance thing? I even ran my Ccleaner and then Combofix. Then I copied and pasted the entire post up until the jam and tried doing a new post with it! Nada!

    Just to be clear… Is this mutilation/ dumbing down something that WP is applying to all versions or packages? If so, Is WP still the best there is? I don’t know why no one could answer that simple question. I asked already.

    When I talk to other people about this, which I’ll be doing, I’d like to get my facts straight.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @musicdoc1, if you read the beginning of my comment, I stated:

    “I do suggest using the script as it’s much better than what WP had before.”

    So I do agree with you that the script is much better than the cookie thing, however, the majority of WP users are unaware of it, which is why I stated that WP should allow us (all bloggers/users) the choice of which editor to use.

    Most WP users have no idea even where the Forums are located and on the “new, too-blue” WP pages there isn’t a link to the Forums at the bottom like on the classic WP Admin. pages.

  • Unknown's avatar

    It’s true that most people don’t even know these forums exist and WP should not feel too complacent because only 90 people have written to this thread — all of them critical. That’s a lot. When the number gets to 100, this discussion might get flagged (or closed).

    @tpenguinltg

    Thank you so much for the greasemonkey script. I have waited for the time that someone with scripting knoledge comes up with a greasemonkey script. Thank you sooo much! As soon as I have more time, I will highlight this option on my blog, because almost all my readers hate the new editor as well… I assume right that you are the creator of the script? I will mention it then!

    For all others… if you don’t use the script yet, it’s indeed much better to use it, because you will never see the new editor again. This is pure magic! ;) Really, install greasemonkey and then the script, it’s awesome!

    Most WP users have no idea even where the Forums are located and on the “new, too-blue” WP pages there isn’t a link to the Forums at the bottom like on the classic WP Admin. pages

    That, the fact that it’s not easy to find the forums, clearly shows that the makers and programmers of WP aren’t interested in our opinion at all.

    The developers have a spotty record of fixing their mistakes. Everyone remembers when they tinkered with the Stats feature. As a result of that, many of us now keep a separate browser tab open to the old Stats page. Back in January, when they tinkered with the Notifications button (to make it more “cool”), there were numerous complaints about the removal of a button to the history feature. They eventually made some fixes, but it wasn’t restored to the way it had been. It’s still clumsy. Many of us now keep a separate browser tab open to the old Notifications screen. Also in January, when the programmers decided to make the admin bar more “cool,” they removed the Edit button. That really ignited a firestorm of protest, and eventually, albeit reluctantly, the Edit button was restored. So the programmers can sometimes respond to criticism.

    But now, when there is yet another firestorm of protest about removal of the button to restore the classic editor, there hasn’t been any response. That button was a great convenience for those of us who can’t use Beep Beep Boop. Yes, there are a few work-arounds we can use to access the classic editor, but they shouldn’t be necessary. With each new “improvement” made by the current crop of programmers, it’s becoming increasingly awkward for bloggers to preserve the functionality of this website.

    Why aren’t we being told whether that button will be restored? Or should we just assume that it’s gone forever? It can’t be any fun being a “happiness engineer” for this thread.

    @sensuouscurmudgeon, Staff has said that the button/link will not return. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/when-editing-an-old-post-how-do-i-switch-to-the-classic-editor?replies=5#post-2316362

    @wpvins, Staff believe we are in the minority, although I don’t believe so.

    @dandelionsalad
    Staff want to believe we’re in a minority because otherwise they’d need to acknowledge they’re wrong, and thus they do all they can to limit our participation.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @ dandelionsalad,

    I agree if we’re talking about reversion to the choice where the classic is the default in all cases, and the new editor is the an option which you can completely ignore or visit with a click on a link, and leave with a click. Disagree if you mean keeping the present system, where edit links open to the new editor, amended only by the inclusion of a link to the classic. I’ll reject any system which forces me to visit the new editor at any time.

  • Unknown's avatar

    So, I just wrote a “how to” about the greasemonkey script of tpenguinltg to share it with my readers as I am aware that almost all of my other fellows and readers dislike the new editor design as well (yep, you read right, I have not seen anyone mentioning that the new design is cool when I wrote about the issue).

    To be honest, the greasemonkey script is the perfect solution because the new editor won’t appear anymore with this script.

    Here is my article: http://diaryofdennis.com/2015/03/24/how-to-force-a-redirect-to-the-classic-wordpress-com-editor-interface/

    I know, I know… shameless plug.. but i strongly suggest that you either create your own article about it or you reblog it. tpenguinltg’s script is just the perfect solution if you are sick talking with WordPress. There will be no chance that we get this link back, they gone nuts.. the future is babymode…

    Intall the script… suggest the script whenever you heard someone complain about the new editor… show WordPress that you won’t use the new editor in any case. Use your voice, create articles about the whole case. Use this magic script while doing so, seriously. This script made my day. I now can continue to publish posts :)

    The updated (improved (ha-ha)) editor is the most unprofessional input/update tool that I have ever seen. Even after the issues with previous poorly designed and implemented upgrades the developers go and do it again. It is as though they enjoy a career in sabotage!

  • Unknown's avatar

    @ arrby,

    Is this mutilation/ dumbing down something that WP is applying to all versions or packages? If so, Is WP still the best there is? I don’t know why no one could answer that simple question.

    1. “All versions or packages” — WordPress.com users do not have a choice of versions. WordPress.org users do. By “packages,” I presume you mean the Premium or Business Plans. Several members with the premium plan have posted to this thread, describing issues with the same new editor as those with the free plan.

    2. “If so, Is WP still the best there is?” — This presumes that WP was at some time the best option, and that what is best for one is best for all. See the Google search results for Best free blogging platforms.

    We would not need a link from BBP to Classic if WP agreed to what they themselves advocate anyway, namely

    Use BBB for simple stuff
    Use Classic Editor for complex stuff

    The editor that was last used to publish/update the post would then the editor that is used when the post is next edited.

    Simple. No links between the 2 editors, and hardly any change to what already exists. No loss of face either.
